Wang Yi's Experience in Developing China Australia Relations

2024-03-20

On March 20th local time, Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held the seventh round of China Australia Diplomatic and Strategic Dialogue with Australian Foreign Minister Huang Yingxian in Canberra. Wang Yi said that when we first met in July 2022, it was not long after the establishment of the new Australian government, and we proposed that both sides "reorganize their attire and start again.". With the joint efforts of both sides, China Australia relations have broken the ice, set sail again, and exchanges and cooperation in various fields have gradually been restored. Wang Yi stated that this is our sixth meeting. Every time we meet, mutual trust between the two sides increases by one point, and China Australia relations take a step forward. This is the value of strengthening communication, which is a positive process of constantly increasing trust and resolving doubts. We hope that this good momentum of interaction can continue to be maintained. This is an important year that connects the past and the future. We should build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership with a more proactive attitude, building on the good momentum of bilateral relations so far. Wang Yi said that the ups and downs of the past 10 years have not only left us with lessons to learn, but also accumulated valuable experiences that are worth cherishing. The most fundamental thing is to adhere to mutual respect. China never interferes in Australia's internal affairs and respects the system and path chosen by Australia. Similarly, regarding China's sovereignty, dignity, and legitimate concerns, we hope that the Australian side can continue to abide by the commitments made since the establishment of diplomatic relations, respect and handle them properly. The most crucial thing is to persist in seeking common ground while reserving differences. There are differences in social systems, history, and culture between China and Australia in many aspects. But the common interests between the two countries far outweigh the differences. Both sides should not only face and express their differences, but also manage and transcend them. The most important thing is to adhere to mutual benefit and win-win results. The Chinese and Australian economies are highly complementary and have enormous potential. Last year, bilateral trade volume grew against the trend, with nearly 80% of Australia's foreign trade surplus coming from trade with China. The correct approach is to strive to expand the cake of common interests and provide a good business environment for the investment and operation of enterprises in both countries. The most precious thing is to adhere to independence and autonomy. China has always pursued an independent and peaceful foreign policy, and our policy towards Australia has been consistent. Independence should also be an important principle of Australia's foreign policy. The development of China Australia relations should not be targeted towards third parties, nor should it be influenced or interfered with by third parties. Wang Yi emphasized that since China Australia relations are on the right track, there should be no hesitation, no deviation, and no turning back. Since the direction of progress is clear, we must strive to walk steadily, well, and far. This is in line with the common interests of the two peoples and is also a common expectation of regional countries. (Lai Xin She)
