On March 26th, the "Baba Niagara World - Baba Niagara Cultural Exhibition on the Maritime Silk Road" (referred to as the "Baba Niagara Exhibition"), hosted by the China Cultural Relics Protection Foundation and the South China Sea Museum in Hainan, China, was held at the South China Sea Museum. This exhibition selected 124 sets of cultural relics from the Asian Civilization Museum and the Indigenous Culture Museum in Singapore, as well as 13 pieces of Indigenous Chinese furniture from the South China Sea Museum in China (Hainan) for exhibition. The content includes portraits of Indigenous Chinese, clothing, household items, wedding customs, architectural styles, and other aspects, presenting the cultural elements of Baba Nianga from multiple perspectives. In the exhibition, the beautifully designed and brightly colored Nyonya porcelain attracted the audience to stop and watch. The patterns of divine beasts, flowers and birds are lifelike, and the most classic combination of patterns is the phoenix and peony, such as the pink phoenix peony patterned lid jar. In addition, exquisite wedding gold thread and pearl embroidery and gold jewelry, magnificent furniture inlaid with mother-in-law, Chinese sacrificial customs and other exhibits showcase the mutual tolerance and innovation between Chinese culture and Southeast Asian culture. "From the display of cultural relics, we can imagine the magnificent scene of maritime trade at that time, search for the inheritance and development of Niangjia culture in the changing times, and feel the beauty of the integration of Chinese culture and the culture of Singapore and Malaysia." Xin Lixue, the director of the South China Sea Museum in Hainan, China, expressed the hope that through this exhibition, we can deepen cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and Singapore. Wen Junyu, Deputy Director of the Museum of Asian Civilization in Singapore, stated that Baba Nyingjo has inherited the Chinese culture of its ancestors and closely interacted with the local communities in Southeast Asia where they settled, integrating into it and forming a vibrant mixed culture. I hope that through this exhibition, the audience can learn about the culture of Baba Nyang and encourage more Chinese viewers to learn about the integrated culture of Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries and regions. The exhibition will last until June 26th. (Lai Xin She)
