Children's medication, these misconceptions should be avoided

2024-04-28

Many parents have experienced such situations when feeding their children medicine, such as breaking pills with bare hands, pounding them into powder, and reducing the dosage of the medicine in half. In fact, children in the growth and development stage have significantly different levels of drug tolerance and dosage compared to adults. It is imperative to improve the safety, accessibility, and convenience of medication for children. Unlike adults, children are more sensitive to adverse drug reactions than adults. If medication is used improperly, it not only affects the health of the child, but may even lead to problems such as drug poisoning. So, how should children use medication reasonably? What are the misconceptions about daily medication given to children by parents? The use of antimicrobials should be careful. For infectious diseases, we should first distinguish between bacterial infection and viral infection. Severe bacterial infections must be treated with antibiotics according to medical advice, otherwise it may worsen the condition and even lead to the development of diseases such as sepsis and meningitis. It should be noted that mixed infection of bacteria and viruses is not easy to determine. The simultaneous use of antimicrobial drugs and antiviral drugs must be treated under the guidance of experienced doctors to avoid increasing drug toxicity. Reducing the frequency of antibiotic use can help reduce the occurrence of drug resistance. It should be noted that once using antibiotics, it is important to ensure sufficient dosage and duration of treatment in order to completely kill bacteria and avoid the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Antibiotics are not necessarily better to use as they are more advanced and expensive. If there is suspicion of bacterial infection, you can cooperate with a doctor to collect corresponding specimens (blood, urine, sputum, feces, etc.), and choose appropriate antibiotics based on bacterial sensitivity. Of course, this prerequisite requires a doctor's prescription. Parents cannot give their children the remaining antibiotics based solely on symptoms and experience. There is currently no specific antiviral drug specifically designed for the common cold, so there is no need to rely on antiviral drugs to treat the common cold. For example, some compound cold preparations contain amantadine, which only has an inhibitory effect on influenza A virus but has no therapeutic effect on rhinoviruses that cause the common cold. The common cold is a self limited disease and generally does not need medication. Only for influenza such as "influenza A" and "influenza B", antiviral drugs need to be applied under the guidance of doctors. Caution should also be exercised when using compound cold medicines. At present, most drugs for treating colds on the market are composed of antipyretic and analgesic drugs, anti allergic drugs, and antipyretic and detoxifying drugs. Some also include cough suppressants, vasoconstrictors, and antiviral drugs. If two or more compound cold preparations are given to the child at the same time, it will cause some ingredients to exceed the dosage, which not only cannot shorten the course of the disease, but also poses a safety hazard to the child. It is recommended to use monotherapy for symptomatic treatment and avoid using compound formulations as much as possible. The correct choice of antipyretic drug acetaminophen (paracetamol) is the most commonly used antipyretic drug in children, usually administered orally or rectally. Ibuprofen preparations, like acetaminophen, have fewer side effects and are a first-line medication for reducing fever in children. It should be noted that only one of the two can be selected and cannot be used in combination. Currently, there is no clinical data on the effectiveness and safety of combination therapy.
