Western media: China Europe dialogue and cooperation help address global challenges

2024-02-29

On February 26th, the Spanish China Policy Watch website published an article titled "From a European Perspective on the Closeness between Spain and China" by Julio Rios, an expert on China issues in Spain. The article excerpt is as follows: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent visit to Spain conveyed important information. Firstly, it is a willingness to extend a hand of cooperation and continue to promote bilateral cooperation in various fields. For Beijing, Spain remains a "good and reliable partner". The absence of conflict is a prominent feature of West China relations. Good political and diplomatic coordination continues to exist. As we turn the page of 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and as the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries approaches its 20th anniversary, China's proposal is clear: Wang Yi publicly expressed China's willingness to strengthen cooperation and enhance bilateral relations. The announcement of sending a new pair of young giant pandas to Spain symbolically proves the positive atmosphere of this visit. Secondly, the background of this visit and the news announced by Wang Yi have brought new opportunities to Spain's agricultural and food industry, tourism and logistics industry, as well as cooperation with third countries. At a time of economic stagnation in Europe, the cooperation advantages and opportunities that China can provide are clearly visible to both sides. However, the ability to make good use of this opportunity will depend on the determination of all parties to invest in the aforementioned collaborative efforts. In the current debate on EU relations with China, China has always attached great importance to Madrid's constructive attitude. Spain, which has always been a supporter of dialogue and reconciliation, has participated in the development of the EU consensus and, like China, advocates for strengthening Brussels' strategic autonomy. Strengthening interdependent cooperation is the best asset for promoting the establishment of an increasingly broad consensus. In this sense, strengthening high-level communication is particularly important. This attitude is particularly appropriate at a time when the EU and China are expected to experience a new wave of trade tensions due to import issues of some goods. We should not overlook the lessons learned from past disputes. Every dialogue solution reached will strengthen the relationship. Every difference that leads to conflict weakens the relationship. This year, both the European Union and the United States will hold elections. For both sides, the relationship with China is extremely important. Spain, as well as Germany and France, these important economies of the European Union, have always chosen a realistic, pragmatic, and moderate approach. Nowadays, this approach is more necessary than ever to prevent relationships from falling into an unstable vortex. Faced with the complex international situation, the position difference between the European Union and China is not that distant. Interdependence is not a risk, but a beneficial and inspiring framework for creative work for all of us. On the other hand, cooperation is essential for successfully addressing the enormous challenges that the global society will face in the coming years - from technological leaps to ecological transformation. If there is no height in the field of vision, we cannot handle cooperation issues well. (Lai Xin She)
