After more than 5 months of Antarctic scientific exploration, China's first independently built polar scientific exploration icebreaker, "Xuelong 2," visited Hong Kong for the first time on the 8th and launched a 5-day event. At around 10 o'clock on the same day, in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, two tugboats and a fire boat collided to form a water arch. At the same time, with the welcome of two helicopters from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Flight Service, eight double decker buses from the Kowloon Motor Bus Company, and multiple civilian and government vessels, the "Snow Dragon 2" slowly sailed into the Tsim Sha Tsui Marine Terminal in Hong Kong. The captain and crew members waved warmly to the citizens waiting at the pier. On land, there are band performances, lion dances, and other programs to enhance the atmosphere, creating a lively atmosphere. At the welcome ceremony, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Li Jiachao, stated that the "Snow Dragon 2" was the first independently built polar scientific research icebreaker in the country, mastering multiple key technologies and achieving multiple innovative results. He said that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 40th anniversary of the country's polar exploration work. The "Snow Dragon 2" takes Hong Kong as its first return stop, taking the lead in showcasing the polar exploration work and scientific research achievements to the general public of Hong Kong, fully reflecting the central government's attention and care for Hong Kong. Sun Shuxian, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, delivered a speech stating that in October 2004, on the occasion of China's 21st Antarctic expedition, the "Snow Dragon" polar exploration ship visited Hong Kong and was warmly welcomed by Hong Kong citizens. After a 20-year hiatus, the 40th Chinese Antarctic Expedition team visited Hong Kong again aboard the country's first independently built polar research icebreaker, the "Xuelong 2", which will promote extensive exchanges and cooperation between mainland and Hong Kong research institutions in the field of polar research. Zhang Beichen, the leader and chief scientist of China's 40th Antarctic Expedition, introduced that the "Xuelong", "Xuelong 2", and "Tianhui" ships of China's 40th Antarctic Expedition set sail on November 1, 2023, lasting 161 days, with a total voyage of over 81000 nautical miles, and successfully completed various exploration tasks. Thank you to all sectors in Hong Kong for their generous hospitality towards the inspection team, "Snow Dragon 2".
