Hainan mine restoration allows waste mines to generate gold

2024-03-11

Hainan Island has discovered 89 types of mineral resources and explored 542 mineral sites. Relying on its abundant resource endowments, Hainan has carried out large-scale mineral resource development in the past few decades, providing resource guarantees for economic development. However, due to early overexploitation, illegal mining, and other reasons, the mining area was devastated, affecting the production and life of surrounding residents, and the local economy was also in a predicament. In response to specific issues such as inadequate responsibility for geological environment management in abandoned mines and the need for green mines to be built, Hainan Province actively promotes mine restoration and management. As of the end of 2023, 101 historical legacy mines have been repaired, covering an area of 426.75 hectares, with an investment of 330 million yuan, including 125 million yuan in social funds. In the process of paying off historical debts, the local government no longer owes new debts due to the development of related resources. Through repeated exploration and practice, Hainan has continuously expanded the transformation path of "abandoned mines green mountains and clear waters gold and silver mountains", achieving a "green balance" between resource development and ecological protection. The historical legacy and closed mines of the past are now undergoing a transformation from an ecological burden to a green wealth. For a period of time, Ye Jianhao, a villager from Fankai Village in Lanyang Town, Danzhou City, has been busy at his own small shop and has transformed into a 4A scenic spot. Ye Jianhao's snack shop is located on the mountainside of the Lianhua Mountain Radon Spring Forest Cultural and Health Preservation Scenic Area in Hainan. Since the opening of the scenic area in 2020, he has quit his job in another city and stayed at his "doorstep" to eat "tourist meals". "During holidays, there are more tourists in the scenic area, and the daily turnover can reach seven to eight thousand yuan." The Lianhua Mountain, which left Ye Jianhao behind, has been avoided in the past. Since the 1950s, the former Blue Ocean Farm has extensively mined limestone, leaving behind six huge mines in Lianhua Mountain. When rainstorm comes, landslides often occur, leading many residents around to move away. Lianhua Mountain was once an important limestone mining area in Danzhou City. From the early 1950s to 2012, the local area relied on the mountains and exploited a large amount of ore, causing the mountain to break and the ecosystem to be severely damaged. In 2018, after the transformation of the original Blue Ocean Farm into an enterprise and the establishment of the Sea Reclamation Tourism Group, the local government began to promote the transformation of Lianhua Mountain from "gray" to "green" with the direction of "mining restoration+cultural tourism". Since 2018, under the guidance of the Hainan Provincial Government, Danzhou City and Hainan Agricultural Reclamation Tourism Group Co., Ltd. have been carrying out comprehensive ecological restoration of multiple broken mountains and mines in Lianhua Mountain, with the direction of mine restoration, environmental governance, cultural injection, and industrial promotion. On this basis, combined with tourism development, a total investment of 260 million yuan will be made to build the Haiken Lianhua Mountain Ecological Restoration Park and Lianhua Mountain Cultural Scenic Area. "In the process of governance, we use the methods of reinforcing mountains and constructing landscapes through the use of suitable forests and grasslands." Zheng Chaochao, Deputy General Manager of Haiken Tourism Group Radon Spring Tourism Development Co., Ltd., introduced that the enterprise reinforced and repaired four broken mountains, treating more than 40000 square meters; More than 5000 vehicles were added to the soil, and 3.9 kilometers of water pipelines were laid; Planting over 30000 trees and planting over 100000 green bamboo trees. After systematic governance, the previously scarred mines have been repainted with green clothing, and enterprises are now
