The deletion and modification of Li Bai's poetry by later generations

As one of the most outstanding poets of the Tang Dynasty, Li Bai has always been loved by future readers. There are many annotations, comments, harmonies, and works on Li Bai's poetry, forming a rich history of acceptance. But there are also some readers who have found imperfections in Li Bai's poetry, so they criticize it, even delete and modify it. An Overview of Li Bai's Poetry Editing and Editing: In the selection, commentary, poetic discourse, and notes of later generations, there are behaviors of editing and editing Li Bai's poetry. There are differences between the poetry collected by the Tang Dynasty anthology and the content of the poetry collection, but it cannot be confirmed whether it belongs to deletion or modification. As recorded in the "Collection of Heroes and Spirits on the River and Mountains", there are no six characters in "When drinking, the cup should not stop". In the Song Dynasty, there began to be deletions and revisions in works such as selected editions and commentaries. For example, Su Shi modified the content of "Difficulty in Traveling" (Part Three), and deleted the lines from "Duying Ying Cheng San Ren" in "Selected Poems of Tang and Song Dynasties" by Liu Kezhuang. The act of editing and revising Li Bai's poetry continued to develop during the Ming Dynasty, with the addition of works on poetry. The number and scale of works that edited and revised Li Bai's poetry during the Qing Dynasty were the largest. For example, Wang Shizhen's "Selected Ten Thousand quatrains from the Tang Dynasty" changed the wording of at least five poems by Li Bai, while Liu Dakui's "Selected Poems from Previous Dynasties" deleted 20 poems by Li Bai. It can be seen that the deletion and modification of Li Bai's poetry by later generations is not an isolated case, but has a certain universality. There are two ways to delete and modify Li Bai's poetry. Firstly, modify the wording of the poem. As in the Song Dynasty edition of "Silent Night Thoughts": "Looking at the moonlight in front of the bed, it is suspected that it is frost on the ground. Looking up at the mountain moon, bowing down to think of my hometown." However, in the selected versions of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the text gradually changed. "Watching the Moonlight" is referred to as "Bright Moonlight" in Li Panlong's "Selected Tang Poems", Wang Shizhen's "Selected Ten Thousand quatrains of Tang Dynasty", and Shen Deqian's "Collection of Tang Poems", while "Watching the Mountains and Moonlight" is referred to as "Watching the Bright Moonlight" in Li Panlong's "Selected Ancient and Modern Poems", and Qianlong's "Tang and Song Poems". After the relay of numerous famous scholars and the promotion of popular Mongolian works such as "Three Hundred Tang Poems", the current version of "Quiet Night Thoughts" has become: "The bright moon in front of the bed is bright, suspected to be frost on the ground. Looking up at the bright moon, bowing down to think of my hometown." Another example is "Early Departure from the White Emperor City": "In the morning, I bid farewell to the colorful clouds of the White Emperor, and a thousand miles of Jiangling return in a day. The sound of monkeys on both sides of the river is endless, and the light boat has already crossed ten thousand mountains." "The cry is endless." In Gao Bing's "Collection of Tang Poems," Wang Shizhen's "Selected Poems of Ten Thousand Tang Poems," and Shen Deqian's "Tang Poems." In selected editions such as "Selected Works", "Tang and Song Poems" by Qianlong, and "Three Hundred Tang Poems" by Sun Zhu, they have all been changed to "unable to stop crying". These changes to poetry words have no version basis and are subjective judgments made by later generations from an aesthetic perspective, but have been approved by many selected versions. Secondly, delete some poetic lines. This type of editing is the most common, and sometimes deleting some lines can change the style of the poem. As in the poem "Autumn in the Midnight Wu Song": "Chang'an is covered in a moon, and the sound of thousands of households pounding clothes. The autumn wind cannot be exhausted, and it is always the Jade Pass sentiment. When will the barbarians be pacified, and the good people stop their expedition?" Originally a six line Yuefu poem, Tian Tongzhi's "Xipu Shuo Shi" deleted the last two lines and changed them to a five character quatrain. However, in the "Tang and Song Poetry Chunchun", he was opposed by Qianlong: "Those who delete the last two lines as quatrains, do not see this virgin's bright heart, why is the wind so harsh and vulgar?" Similarly, in the poem "Guanshan Yue": "The bright moon"
