How Life Education Can Become a "Compulsory Course" in the Two Sessions

2024-03-07

During this year's National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a representative of the National People's Congress suggested that life education should be included in the basic curriculum system of schools, making it an indispensable "normal course" and "compulsory course". This can be more conducive to helping students have a new and correct understanding of life. Life education mainly includes knowledge about the origin of life, how to protect oneself, and how to respect and respect the lives of oneself and others. Essentially, it is a transmission of humanistic knowledge and the construction of the fundamental logic of life philosophy, which is of course very important. From some exposed cases in recent years, it can be seen that life education really needs to be strengthened, such as the increasing trend of animal abuse incidents committed by minors. In 2020, an 11 year old boy's cat abuse incident occurred in Nanjing, Jiangsu. In 2023, a 17 year old student in Kaifeng, Henan organized an online live stream of cat abuse, and other online revelations continued to emerge. Some experts said that nowadays, the cases of cat and dog abuse are showing a trend of low age, and the animal cruelty team has created a black industry chain. They are extending their "magic claws" to minors, penetrating into students through various Internet channels such as game groups and post bars, so that minors can see these videos of animal cruelty. So, life education is actually about competing with this cruel and indifferent violence to showcase students. If life education cannot first lay a foundation of values for students, then they may be tempted by these contents, leading to their personality being shaped in a distorted information space. In reality, life education has received widespread attention. For example, as early as 2004, Liaoning Province formulated the "Special Work Plan for Life Education in Primary and Secondary Schools", and Shanghai also released the "Guidelines for Life Education for Primary and Secondary School Students in Shanghai" in 2005. In 2010, the Ministry of Education officially announced the "National Medium - and Long Term Education Reform and Development Plan Outline", which proposed to "attach importance to safety education, life education, national defense education, and sustainable development education.". However, overall, the proportion of life education in the education system is not high, and the teaching content of schools still focuses on courses related to intelligence and abilities, with insufficient emphasis on life education. For example, at this two sessions, Zhao Wanping's representative gave an example that the current unified textbooks still lack a complete teaching unit on the theme of "life care". Therefore, life education has become a focus of education with a larger scope, which is indeed worth serious exploration. How to systematize, modularize, and normalize life education also requires continuous exploration by educators. However, objectively speaking, it should also be noted that life education is a form of moral education, which is difficult to quantify and assess like cultural courses, and teaching outcomes are also difficult to visually demonstrate. This also means to some extent that people's emphasis on life education cannot be solely placed on the classroom. The broadest carrier of life education is still the social space - the rational level of public opinion, which is actually the "teacher" who imparts life education in daily life. In 2020, Shenzhen, Guangdong voted to pass the "Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Comprehensive Prohibition of the Consumption of Wild Animals Regulations", which explicitly prohibits the consumption of pets such as cats and dogs; At this year's two sessions, some members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference suggested legislation to protect companion animals. These have caused considerable controversy on the internet
