2023-12-28

The Central Asian region is located at the junction of the Eurasian continent and is a hub that connects the Eurasian continent. In 2023, there will be a new round of development and changes in the security situation in Central Asia. New features worth paying attention to. In 2023, there have been some new features worth paying attention to in the military security situation in Central Asia. From an external perspective, Central Asia is a hub that connects the Eurasian continent. With the continuous changes in the international security situation, the geopolitical position of Central Asia has become increasingly important, and the region has become a new focus of the great power game. Since this year, the United States, the European Union, India, Türkiye, Japan and other countries and organizations have increased their diplomatic offensive against countries in Central Asia. From an internal perspective, the five Central Asian countries were previously Soviet republics with similar national conditions. Most countries are undergoing a period of economic and social transformation. When facing foreign powers intervening in regional affairs, they implement a diversified and balanced foreign policy, enhance their overall strength through cooperation, and obtain as much security guarantees as possible. The security situation in Central Asia has shown a stable and positive trend compared to the previous year. On the one hand, the overall relationship between countries within the region is improving. In the past few years, conflicts occurred between some Central Asian countries due to border demarcation and water resource competition, resulting in casualties and property damage. To avoid such situations from happening again, Central Asian countries have begun to adopt a "stability first" conflict management model. This year, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have delineated 90% of their borders, effectively avoiding the recurrence of border conflicts. However, there are still disputes over border delineation between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, as well as between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Disputes over the use and development of water resources among countries have not been effectively resolved. The possibility of conflicts in Central Asia due to issues such as border demarcation and water resource allocation still exists in the future. On the other hand, countries within the region maintain reasonable and moderate military construction. Affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Central Asian countries have reassessed the international security situation, focusing on improving military defense capabilities and strengthening regional security cooperation. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have successively released new military doctrines, stating that addressing new security threats is a military security strategic goal. In terms of military strength construction, the military forces of Central Asian countries are in line with their national strength and military security needs, maintaining reasonable military expenditures and moderate military size. Some countries in Central Asia have weak military industrial foundations, and increasing imports and expanding domestic production capacity are the main ways of equipment construction, with drones, military transport planes, and high-precision lethal weapons as the key development directions. In the complex and ever-changing international situation, the procurement of weapons and equipment by Central Asian countries is developing towards diversification. Many countries have imported UAVs, radars and other weapons and equipment from Türkiye, Iran, Belarus and other countries, while constantly improving their own research and production capabilities. With the increasing geopolitical importance of Central Asia, countries outside the region are cooperating with countries in the region to achieve a balanced and diverse foreign policy. Russia has maintained close contacts with Central Asian countries in politics, economy, security, culture, and other aspects for a long time. The United States did not form a coherent and complete Central Asian policy for a long time, and after the 9/11 attacks, Central Asia became an important part of the US global counter-terrorism strategy. 2020
