High incidence of respiratory infectious diseases in spring: Tianjin CDC proposes four prevention and control suggestions

2025-04-17

"Recently, the activity of COVID-19 has slightly increased, but the epidemic intensity is far lower than the peak in the spring of 2024." On the 9th, the Tianjin Health Commission held a press conference on "Season and Health" (spring). Wu Weishen, the chief physician of the Institute of Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control of Tianjin Center for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed at the conference that in addition to influenza and COVID-19, rhinovirus, common coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus and other pathogens can also cause respiratory infectious diseases. Wu Weishen introduced that recent respiratory multi pathogen monitoring results have shown that common coronavirus and rhinovirus are among the top pathogens causing respiratory infections in outpatient cases, while respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus account for a relatively high proportion in hospitalized cases. In addition, spring is also a high incidence season for respiratory infectious diseases such as chickenpox and scarlet fever, especially in collective units such as schools where gatherings and outbreaks are prone to occur. Regarding this, Wu Weishen put forward four suggestions, stating that firstly, key populations such as those with underlying diseases and the elderly should still adhere to the scientific wearing of masks. In densely populated or poorly ventilated places, such as taking public transportation, going to hospitals, shopping malls and other public places, it is recommended to wear masks. Furthermore, maintaining hand hygiene is crucial, and it is important to develop the good habit of washing hands frequently, especially during critical moments such as before and after eating, before and after using the restroom, and after coming into contact with public goods. If conditions do not permit, hand sanitizers can be used for hand cleaning. In addition, personal protective measures should be taken during contact with poultry and other animals. When cooking animal derived foods such as eggs and meat, it is important to ensure that the food is cooked thoroughly. Finally, to maintain fresh indoor air, it is recommended to open windows for ventilation at least 2-3 times a day for 20-30 minutes each time. This can help reduce the concentration of indoor pathogens and lower the risk of infection. Wu Weishen pointed out that in addition to the prevention and control measures mentioned above, special attention should also be paid to timely vaccination against chickenpox and other related vaccines to improve immunity levels; Pay close attention to your physical condition. If you experience respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, etc., seek medical attention promptly and inform the doctor of your travel and contact history. (New Society)
