CDC: Preventing campus transmission of rhinovirus during the new school season

2025-02-19

At the beginning of the new semester, the gathering and close contact of campus crowds have increased, and the risk of rhinovirus transmission cannot be ignored. On the 17th, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminded that rhinovirus is one of the important pathogens that cause the common cold, and targeted protective measures should be taken to better ensure the health of teachers and students during the new semester. Rhinovirus is a type of enveloped small RNA virus, named after its earliest isolation from the nasal cavity of cold patients. It is suitable for reproduction in nasal environments ranging from 33 ℃ to 35 ℃. Currently, 169 types have been discovered, and the diversity of types makes it difficult for the human body to form a lasting immune system. After being infected with rhinovirus, most people have mild symptoms, with normal or slightly elevated body temperature. Common mild symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, etc., which usually heal within a week. But for a small number of children, immunocompromised individuals, and patients with chronic respiratory diseases, it may trigger asthma or lower respiratory tract infections. According to experts from the Institute of Virology at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, rhinovirus is mainly transmitted through contact and airborne transmission. Rhinovirus can survive on the surface of objects for several days and has a certain tolerance to alcohol. Contact with contaminated surfaces such as door handles and desks, touching the mouth and nose, or inhaling droplets from coughing or sneezing can all cause infection. How to strengthen campus prevention and control? Experts emphasize the following measures: encourage teachers and students to maintain personal hygiene, wash hands frequently, and avoid hand contact with eyes, nose, and mouth; Regular ventilation in classrooms and dormitories to reduce air retention in enclosed environments; Students can wear masks when taking public transportation or entering crowded places, which not only blocks droplets but also keeps the nasal cavity warm and moist; Regularly and scientifically disinfect high-frequency contact items, such as desks, door handles, etc. Experts call on children, the elderly, and patients with underlying diseases to rest in a timely manner when experiencing symptoms. If symptoms become more severe, seek medical attention in a timely manner. School aged children should avoid going to school with illness to increase the risk of transmission. Schools should strengthen health education, and parents should cooperate to pay attention to students' physical condition, jointly building a campus health defense line and escorting the new semester.
