How to help children overcome the "back to school syndrome" of fatigue, anxiety, aversion to learning, and refusal to learn?

As primary and secondary school students return to school, they bid farewell to their holidays and return to campus life. However, many children may experience "back to school syndrome" such as fatigue, anxiety, and even refusal to attend school during this transitional stage. How to help children smoothly get through this critical period, listen to what experts have to say. Li Xiaojun, director of the Department of Psychological and Behavioral Medicine at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, said that at the beginning of the school year, children may experience physical symptoms such as bedridden, inexplicable temper tantrums, and even headaches and abdominal pain. Behind these manifestations, there are often hidden "signals" of school anxiety. From a neuroscience perspective, the switch between a relaxed state during holidays and a tense mode of returning to school can trigger a tug of war between the prefrontal cortex responsible for planning and control and the limbic system responsible for emotions. Common symptoms include sleep disorders, difficulty falling asleep or feeling drowsy, decreased appetite, headaches and abdominal pain, emotional irritability, low mood, excessive worry, behavioral procrastination in homework, addiction to electronic devices, refusal to discuss school topics, etc. Experts suggest that if the relevant symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, or are accompanied by thoughts of self harm, panic attacks, etc., it is necessary to seek medical attention promptly to screen for psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. Li Xiaojun said that psychological adjustment at the beginning of the school year is not a "quick battle", but a "endurance race" that requires patience and persistence. The disrupted circadian rhythm during holidays can disrupt the melatonin cortisol secretion cycle. Adjusting one's daily routine can be achieved by waking up in a staggered manner, which means going to bed/waking up 15 minutes earlier than the previous day to avoid "violent awakenings", or by using light regulation methods. In the morning, opening curtains to receive natural light can suppress melatonin secretion, and in the evening, reducing blue light exposure. In addition, when children say "they don't want to go to school", it is recommended that parents put aside preaching and adopt emotional externalization methods, such as having children draw "school monsters" and giving them a sense of control by altering colors and adding weapons. Or through cognitive restructuring exercises, transform and dissolve negative thoughts. The Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that teachers and parents should pay more attention to their children's inner world and maintain good communication with them. Guide children to reduce their playtime, participate more in outdoor activities, and cultivate diverse interests and hobbies. At the same time, it is necessary to assist children in formulating reasonable plans, achieving a balance between work and rest, and maintaining a regular daily routine. Listen patiently to the child's troubles and provide timely guidance and encouragement. If the child's self-regulation is ineffective or the symptoms persist for a long time, they should seek the help of a professional physician in a timely manner. (New Society)
