How to maintain inner peace and resilience in complex environments? How to not only avoid being defeated in adversity, but also gain growth from it? This is not only a topic of personal growth, but also an important issue that the entire society needs to pay attention to. Psychological resilience, as an ability to quickly recover and grow from stress, setbacks, and adversity, is the key to coping with change. It is not only an important field of psychological research, but also has a profound foundation in human culture. The character "tough" is composed of "wei" and "blade". The original meaning of "Wei" refers to ripe cowhide, and "blade" is the cutting edge. Imagine what it feels like to hold a piece of ripe cowhide in your hand? Rub it, rub it, twist it, even use a knife to scratch it, it won't be damaged. If compared to a person, an organization, a country, a nation, or a culture, they have a strong endogenous drive, with a soft yet sturdy texture; When subjected to external forces, although it may deform, it will not become brittle or brittle; Although there may be fluctuations, there is always a way to restore vitality; Despite various difficulties, there is always strong resilience, wear resistance, and internal driving force. This is the cultural and psychological inspiration brought to us by the word 'resilience'. Confucius proposed that 'a gentleman should have no tools', which means that a gentleman should have the ability to adapt to various environments. Mencius emphasized the importance of adversity in tempering one's character by saying, 'When heaven bestows great responsibilities upon a person, one must first sharpen their heart and mind, and strain their muscles and bones.'. Laozi mentioned in the Tao Te Ching that 'softness triumphs over hardness', believing that the power of flexibility is more enduring than strength. The principle of 'letting nature take its course' to maintain inner peace in the face of change reflects the great wisdom of maintaining resilience and overcoming adversity with softness. What is resilience in psychology? The first is rebound force, which is like an object being able to bounce back and return to its normal state after being subjected to pressure. The second is pressure resistance, just like the tough rubber on wheels, which is very resistant to pressure and also very wear-resistant. The third is posttraumatic growth (PTG). There is a concept called "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD), which refers to the damage to the brain and nervous system caused by setbacks, hardships, and blows, resulting in emotional and psychological decline, even collapse. However, psychologists have also found that many people, relying on their positive inner strength and scientific methods, can completely overcome the shadow and achieve a more satisfying state of life after trauma, which is post-traumatic growth. The experiment found that different people have vastly different reactions to setbacks. Some people are able to quickly adjust their mentality and overcome the losses and setbacks in life, while others may be deeply trapped in pain as a result. The difference lies in the strength of psychological resilience. Therefore, psychological resilience is a very important psychological variable that determines a person's ability to overcome difficulties and achieve sustained success. Whether it's a large number of psychological science experiments, the stories of great figures in history, or the life journeys of many ordinary people around us, they all tell us that psychological resilience is not a natural quality, but needs to be developed through continuous learning, exploration, practice, and adjustment. Psychological resilience is not simply about being strong. Behind the hard work of the Chinese people, there is more a psychological force that can face up to pain, abandon emptiness, endure perseverance, and constantly strive for self-improvement. A resilient culture often goes through four steps to cope with changes, especially those that are long-term, deep, and complex. One is to prepare in advance. It is to remain vigilant and carefully formulate reasonable goals and strategic systems in the face of possible changes. The second is to remain calm in the face of danger. For problems that cannot be judged or foreseen, remain calm, resist the invasion of external negative influences, and actively absorb external energy with a "flexible" posture. The third is to adapt to changing circumstances. To adapt to changes and adopt flexible tactics to deal with them, and find space to leverage one's own advantages, one must not fall into a self pitying victim mentality, let alone complain about "poor adaptation" and remain stagnant. The fourth is quick recovery. Any major change has a time cycle, and when a new survival adaptation arrives, it is necessary to quickly invest resources and establish an innovative system to "rebound" and enter a state of "being prepared for the future" again, forming a closed loop. Today, there are many scientific methods to enhance psychological resilience, overcome pain, setbacks, and hardships: breaking perfectionism and accepting oneself. Many excellent people may fall into the trap of "self-criticism impulse", manifested as excessive perfectionism, and excellence becomes a serious psychological burden. Research has found that this anxiety is a significant cause of psychological resilience depletion. To enhance psychological resilience, the first step is to let go of the burden of perfectionism and self anxiety, embrace oneself, and appreciate oneself. Maintain positive interpersonal relationships and social support. The human brain can produce a particularly important neurochemical neurotransmitter - oxytocin, which can make people feel love, sincerity, and care, and warm and flowing in their hearts. Therefore, maintaining good family, work, social, and cultural relationships, maintaining good relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, participating in community activities, helping others, and having more social empathy can all enhance psychological resilience. In addition, there are some scientific techniques that can help people strengthen their psychological resilience from the details. For example, when feeling down, you can do some relaxing breathing exercises. When emotional exhaustion occurs, one can smell the fragrance of nature. When feeling powerless in the face of challenges, make yourself a meal, brew a pot of tea, or make a cup of coffee. When feeling lonely, you can do some exercise. Life is a combination of fragments, and success is the accumulation of details. Different details management can provide people with completely different psychological feelings and emotional values. These methods can help us overcome emotional exhaustion, overcome self doubt, stimulate psychological strength, overcome psychological lows, and create a strong, upward, and everlasting resilience in life. When each of us has positive psychological resilience, our society will be more hopeful. The great literary figure Su Dongpo encountered many ups and downs in his life, but he always maintained a strong psychological resilience. As he wrote in "Ding Feng Bo": "Don't listen to the sound of piercing through the forest and beating leaves, why not sing and move slowly. Bamboo sticks and shoes are lighter than horses, who is afraid? A cloud of smoke and rain can last a lifetime." In life, it is not as good as nine out of ten things, the most important thing is to maintain our own inner peace and perseverance. Wishing everyone to maintain resilience and achieve a happy life in 2025. (New Press) (The author is a professor at the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science, Tsinghua University)
