In daily life, sudden pain on the outer side of the elbow, difficulty in flexion and extension, and even simple household chores can be affected, which may be caused by "tennis elbow". What is' tennis elbow '? How to determine if you have 'tennis elbow'? How to relieve the pain caused by "tennis elbow"? To this end, people.com.cn interviewed Xu Dingli, a Chinese doctor in the acupuncture and moxibustion and Massage Department of Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine affiliated to Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Xu Dingli introduced that "tennis elbow", also known as lateral epicondylitis of the humerus, is a typical case of overwork injury. The lateral epicondyle is located on the outer side of the elbow joint and serves as the insertion point for the extensor tendon of the forearm, responsible for movements such as wrist extension and finger extension. If subjected to repeated stretching and strain, the insertion point muscles may become inflamed, leading to pain and the appearance of 'tennis elbow'. 'Tennis elbow' does have some connection with tennis. Initially, doctors found that this disease was more common among tennis players. However, tennis elbow is not just a problem for tennis players. Badminton players, table tennis players, housewives, and people engaged in physical labor can all suffer from this disease Xu Dingli pointed out that with changes in work methods, many people need to hold their phones or type on computer keyboards for long periods of time to engage in activities such as work, study, and entertainment. This can also lead to prolonged tension in the arm and forearm muscles, thereby increasing the risk of developing "tennis elbow". In addition, as people age, their flexibility decreases and muscle imbalance increases the risk of developing "tennis elbow". How to determine if you have 'tennis elbow'? Xu Dingli said that "tennis elbow" usually has the following symptoms: pain on the outer side of the elbow joint; Pain sometimes radiates upwards or downwards, and the flexion and extension of the elbow joint are usually not affected; Hands should not be used to forcefully grip, twist, or grab objects, otherwise the pain will worsen. He emphasized that if diagnosed with 'tennis elbow', the most important thing is to pay attention to rest. During acute attacks, it is important to avoid lifting heavy objects or engaging in vigorous exercise on the affected limb, and to take measures such as braking and resting to protect the affected limb. Patients who have been ill for less than 3 months can achieve complete relief through self-protection, rehabilitation training, medication treatment, and other methods. To help patients relieve the pain caused by "tennis elbow", Xu Dingli introduced the following three sets of stretching movements: stretch the wrist up and down, straighten the arm, with the palm facing down or downwards, use the other hand to push the palm of the hand, feel the stretching sensation of the forearm and hand, and hold the stretch for 15 seconds in each direction. Stretching once each up and down forms one group, with three groups per day. Wrist centrifugal stretching: Place the forearm on the table, extend the wrist to the edge of the table, straighten the forearm, palm down, and bend the wrist upwards (preferably with a weight of 0.5 to 1 pound for practice), hold for about 2 seconds, and then slowly relax. 30 to 50 times per group, 2 groups per day. Wrist supine movement: Place your arm comfortably suspended on the table, rotate your forearm with your palm facing up, and make a fist with your hand. Then, while turning the palm downwards, apply resistance to the rotating fist with the healthy side hand and hold for about 3 seconds. When the front arm rotates inward, slowly let the side applying resistance "win". 10 times for 1 group, 3 groups per day. There may be slight pain during stretching exercises, but it will not cause severe pain. If you feel severe pain, you should stop immediately Xu Dingli emphasized. (New Society)
