The 2024 Digital Economy Summit opens in Hong Kong to collaborate on the development of the digital economy

The 2-day Digital Economy Summit, hosted by the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the Office of the Director of Information Technology, and Cyberport, opened in Hong Kong on April 12th. The summit, with the theme of "Unlimited Achievements of Intelligent Innovation for a Sustainable Future," gathers over a hundred well-known leaders in the field of innovation, industry pioneers, and business from both domestic and international sources. At the opening ceremony, the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, Chan Mo po, delivered a speech stating that the digital economy has clearly become a new driving force for global economic development. The current situation in the digital economy is complex, with fierce competition between cities and economies. Hong Kong must act quickly to maintain its leading position. To this end, Chen Maobo mentioned that Hong Kong has established a Digital Economy Development Committee and put forward 12 core recommendations, mainly focusing on 5 aspects, including optimizing Hong Kong's overall digital policy, strengthening digital infrastructure, promoting local and cross-border data flow, accelerating digital transformation, and formulating sustainable talent strategies. So how can we increase cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China in the digital economy next? Wang Song, Deputy Director of the State Internet Information Office, said in his speech that in recent years, the digital economy in the mainland has flourished, and the evolution of "digital industrialization" and "industrial digitalization" has accelerated. In 2023, the number of domestic internet users has reached 1.092 billion, and the scale of the digital economy has exceeded 50 trillion yuan, accounting for 41.5% of GDP, ranking second in the world in total. The Hong Kong SAR government has invested over HKD 200 billion to support the development of science and technology innovation, and the enthusiasm for investing in science and technology innovation is unprecedentedly high. The innovation and technology ecosystem is increasingly growing. Regarding the future development of the digital economy, Wang Song believes that Hong Kong and mainland China, especially mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area, have many good advantages and foundations for cooperation. Wang Song suggested enhancing the development level of the Digital Bay Area, fully leveraging the institutional advantages of "one country, two systems", and actively promoting joint innovation in digital technology among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao; Taking advantage of the gathering of top international talents in Hong Kong, we will lay out future industries such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, web3.0, quantum information, and brain computer interfaces; Build a number of digital industrial clusters with perfect industrial chain, strong radiation driving force and international competitiveness, and build the Greater Bay Area into a strategic fulcrum of the new development pattern, a demonstration site for high-quality development, and a leading place for Chinese path to modernization. In addition, he also proposed "activating the value of data elements", believing that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau recently issued the "Policy Declaration on Promoting Data Circulation and Ensuring Data Security in Hong Kong", and the mainland introduced the "Regulations on Promoting and Regulating Cross border Data Flow", which laid an important institutional foundation for data cooperation between the two regions. Wang Song also believed that the Greater Bay Area has great potential in talent cultivation and educational cooperation, and said that the National Internet Information Office will continue to provide Hong Kong youth with opportunities to start businesses and practice in the mainland, promote the establishment of an all-round and multi-level exchange mechanism, encourage mainland and Hong Kong enterprises, universities, and research institutes to strengthen cooperation, cultivate technical reserves, promote the growth of professional talents, and provide a greater stage for Hong Kong youth to pave the way for bridging.
