Building a World of Books Belonging to Children

Childhood needs nourishment, choosing what kind of children's books determines what kind of future. At the recent 2023 "Love to Read Children's Books 100" press conference, senior children's book publisher Hai Fei said that we have entered a big era of children's literature, children's book publishing, and children's reading. We should pursue high-quality children's reading, promote universal reading, and prioritize children. According to statistics, there are over 3000 book lists launched by institutions, publishers, media, individuals, and others within a year. The book lists are flying everywhere, which not only promotes reading, but also brings confusion to teachers, students, and parents in terms of choices. What exactly is a good children's book? What kind of books should be placed on children's bookshelves and in campus libraries? How can teachers guide students in reading? At the press conference, experts and scholars from various fields deeply interpreted the problems and misconceptions in children's reading from the perspectives of art, science, humanities, education, etc., and explored how to select, read, and use books with a professional perspective. "Is reading just 'reading words'?" Many people ask how to read a book without words? They believe that' reading 'is' reading words'. "Painter and picture book creator Ji Zhaohua believes that one should not translate a book without words into a book with words to read to children. Reading is a process deeply processed by the brain, which requires not only seeing with the eyes, but also thinking and drawing conclusions. The significance of picture books lies in avoiding words and allowing children who have not mastered the tools of words to read them first. In the future, when children master language and writing tools, they will develop better and faster than those who have not learned to read but have learned a lot of things. The same goes for children learning to draw. "Many of the children's paintings we see are actually not real children's paintings." Ji Zhaohua took out two pictures of elephants that children drew and introduced them. On the left is a traditional simple brush painting taught to children, which looks very similar. However, this is not the elephant that children actually see, but "technical training". It is a symbol of an elephant invented by adults. On this symbol, you can find everything that elephants have, such as long teeth, long noses, and a huge body. Apart from that, you cannot see what the living environment of elephants is like. And the elephant painted by the child is covered in messy lines. At this point, you must ask the child why they are painting like this? He will tell you that this is his personal experience of seeing an elephant at the zoo - the elephant has long fur on its body, not bare, and the zoo is filled with furry, smelly, and dirty things. So he drew his visual, olfactory, and taste experiences of the zoo, which is the true children's painting. Ji Zhaohua said that real children's paintings reflect the development of children's brain neural networks, and experienced psychologists can even guess the approximate age and level of development of children based on this painting. For example, scholars have summarized a rule for children to draw small figures: at the age of 3-4, they draw a round head and insert four sticks to make their limbs; At the age of 5, there is a clear distinction between the body and limbs; The small figures drawn by a 6-year-old child are called tubular figures by scholars; Children aged 7-8 particularly enjoy drawing small figures in various postures, but they cannot draw them well; Only children over 9 years old can draw good posture such as sitting, standing, and running. “
