The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced on the 28th that Yang Runxiong, Director of the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CTTB), has appointed Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing as the "Cultural Promotion Ambassador" for a term of approximately 5 years, effective from March 28th. Last year, internationally renowned Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun was appointed as Hong Kong's first "Cultural Promotion Ambassador". The Sports and Tourism Bureau stated that in order to expand the "Cultural Promotion Ambassador" program to other cultural and artistic fields, Xu Bing will be appointed as the second "Cultural Promotion Ambassador". He will be responsible for planning large-scale art projects in Hong Kong and cultivating young talents, bringing strong support to cultural promotion. On that day, the appointment ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and Yang Runxiong presented a letter of appointment to Xu Bing. During the appointment ceremony, Yang Runxiong stated that Xu Bing is recognized as one of the most creative and influential contemporary Chinese artists. His artworks not only reflect the beauty of traditional culture, but also combine contemporary art to make important contributions to the promotion of Chinese culture in the international art community. He also mentioned that the Hong Kong Museum of Art has collected one of Xu Bing's most well-known works of art, "The Book of Heaven," which combines classical and modern elements, transcending cultural boundaries, such as Hong Kong, the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures, containing unique connotations. Yang Runxiong hopes that Xu Bing can use his rich international network and experience in teaching and cultural exchange to assist local young art talents in internships and artistic exchanges in mainland China or overseas, expanding their horizons and development in the field of culture and art. Xu Bing is deeply honored to be appointed as the "Cultural Promotion Ambassador". He stated that Hong Kong's culture of blending Chinese and Western elements is in line with his own creative philosophy. We hope to present the existing Hong Kong characteristics to the public in a refreshing way through artistic creation, showcasing Hong Kong's characteristics to the world. We also hope to cultivate young Hong Kong artists through future cooperation plans and upcoming art projects. Xu Bing has served as the Vice Dean of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and has won numerous awards in the international art scene, including the 14th Fukuoka Asian Culture Award in Japan, the 1st Welsh International Visual Art Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Printmaking Art from the American Printmakers Association.
