Hubei Province First Announces 3D Reconstructed Statues of Qin Officials Over Two Thousand Years Ago

On the 25th, the Hubei Provincial Museum held a press conference, announcing for the first time the restoration of a Qin official named "Xi" from over two thousand years ago using 3D printing technology. In 1975, more than 1000 bamboo slips were unearthed from the Qin tomb in Shuihudi, Yunmeng County, Hubei Province. This was the first discovery of Qin Dynasty bamboo slips in Chinese archaeological history and the first systematic discovery of Qin Dynasty laws. The legal documents extracted and recorded by the owner of the M11 tomb and a grassroots legal worker in Qin were related to social life and national governance at that time. In 2019, the Hubei Provincial Museum, the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, and the School of Archaeology of Jilin University conducted a comprehensive study on the bones of the owner "Xi" of the M11 tomb in Yunmeng Sleeping Tiger Land, and recently achieved expected results. Wang Xianfu, Deputy Director of Hubei Provincial Museum, introduced that the bones of "Xi" are well preserved, including the skull, mandible, scapula, upper limb bones, sternum, ribs, spine, and lower limb bones (with missing right tibia and distal fibula). There are also many missing bones in the hands and feet. Based on a comprehensive observation of the morphological features of the skull, mandible, and pelvis, it is proven that the tomb owner is male. According to the maximum length of the femur, its height is 161.5 centimeters; According to the measurement of the maximum diameter of the left femoral head, it is estimated that its weight is 59.9 kilograms; Taking into account factors such as pubic symphysis and molar wear, the age range should be between 45 and 50 years old. "By observing the pathological phenomena in various parts of its bones, including osteoarthritis of the vertebrae and upper limb bones, as well as the 'kneeling distance surface' of the lower limbs, it reflects the presence of high and low shoulder or cervical spondylosis during its lifetime. This is consistent with its behavioral habits of long-term engagement in literary and historical records and desk work," said Wang Xianfu. At the same time, based on the determination of strontium isotopes in different parts of the bones, it is speculated that his childhood was not in Anlu (Yunmeng), and there were life experiences of migrating from other places to Anlu. This is similar to what can be seen in the Yunmeng Zhengjiahu Cemetery, where "most tomb owners come from Guanzhong and its surrounding areas.". The research team collected accurate data based on "Xi"'s skull through two-dimensional linear measurement and three-dimensional panoramic photography technology, and used the reconstructed high-precision three-dimensional model of the skull to systematically and accurately analyze its craniofacial features; By comprehensively utilizing virtual material comparison technology, digital carving technology, and facial topology editing technology, facial white film is generated, facial features, skin texture, and hair are added. Combined with the biological anthropology information of the fossil and the environmental background factors of the archaeological site, features such as skin color, hair color, and pupil color are restored, ultimately restoring the "Xi" avatar. Yang Lisheng, Director of the Academic Research Center of Hubei Provincial Museum, introduced that the bamboo slips buried in the M11 coffin, "Chronicles", record the great event of Qin's conquest of the six states and unification of the country from the first year of King Zhaoxiang of Qin to the thirtieth year of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, as well as the life experience of the tomb owner "Xi". "These experiences and the 'occupational diseases' they have created are consistent with the results of physical anthropology identification." Yang Lisheng said that the significance of physical anthropology identification lies in the construction of big history by small figures and the display of macro history through the perspective of grassroots figures.
