Representatives from 27 EU countries unanimously support the text of the Artificial Intelligence Act

2024-02-06

On the 2nd, representatives from 27 EU countries unanimously voted in support of the text of the Artificial Intelligence Act, marking an important step for the EU towards legislative regulation of artificial intelligence. The European Commission proposed a negotiation authorization draft for the Artificial Intelligence Act in April 2021. Last December, the European Parliament, EU member states, and the European Commission reached an agreement on the Artificial Intelligence Act. Subsequently, some countries, including France and Germany, expressed objections to the text of the bill, fearing that strict regulation of advanced artificial intelligence models would hinder the development of artificial intelligence in Europe. To address these concerns, the European Commission has launched multiple measures to support innovation in the field of artificial intelligence and established a new regulatory body, the Office of Artificial Intelligence, responsible for the implementation of the bill. The Artificial Intelligence Act still needs to be submitted to the European Parliament for approval. If approved, the relevant rules will be implemented in stages, with some prohibitive rules taking effect six months after the law is passed, and certain rules related to general artificial intelligence models will apply from 2025 onwards.
