Chongzuo, Guangxi: The population of white headed langur grows steadily

2022-12-08

"One, two, three..." Wu Shiyong stood at the foot of a mountain in Chongzuo White headed Leaf Monkey Ecological Park in Guangxi at sunset, watching a white headed leaf monkey "going out" for a day climb the cliff to "go home". Wu Shiyong is the Secretary of the General Party Branch and Director of the Neighborhood Committee of Banli Community, Banli Township, Jiangzhou District, Chongzuo City. He is also a "forest leader". It is his weekly task to patrol the mountains and protect the white headed leaf monkey. The white headed langur has a survival history of more than 3 million years. Its distribution is narrow and the number is rare. It is one of the first level national key protected wild animals and one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world. The wild population is only distributed in Chongzuo, Guangxi. In order to save the endangered white headed langur, since the 1980s, Chongzuo City has set up a special protection organization for white headed langur, established a conservation area, and started to protect the habitat of monkeys. In 2012, the White headed Leaf Monkey Reserve was promoted to a national nature reserve, consisting of four areas: Banli, Bapan, Tuozhu and Daling, with a total area of 25000 hectares. In April 2018, Chongzuo, as a pilot city, took the lead in implementing the forest leader system in Guangxi. At present, the local forest leaders' organization system at the city, county, township and village levels has been fully covered, and 1693 forest leaders at all levels have been identified. In recent years, Chongzuo has established a sound natural protection mechanism and strengthened the protection of the ecological resources of the white headed langur by taking the forest leader system as the starting point. On October 1, 2021, the first primate habitat protection regulation in China, the Chongzuo White headed Leaf Monkey Habitat Protection Regulation, was officially implemented. The habitat protection areas were reasonably demarcated, the habitat protection management mechanism was straightened out, and the protection of white headed leaf monkeys was further standardized and legalized. Chongzuo City has implemented the responsibility of management and protection in different areas to achieve full coverage of daily patrol and monitoring of the Reserve. We have vigorously implemented the project of ecological protection and restoration of mountains, forests, fields, lakes and grasses. Two ecological corridors, five drinking water sources and one food source botanical garden have been built for the white headed langur. More than 500 mu of the white headed langur habitat has been restored, effectively improving the quality of the white headed langur habitat, and promoting the healthy development of the white headed langur population. In addition, Chongzuo also strengthened its cooperation with new media such as CCTV, and launched 24-hour live broadcast of white headed langurs. The number of online viewers exceeded 1.4 million, with more than 5000 comments. The protection of white headed langurs has attracted more attention. In October 2020, the White headed Leaf Monkey Reserve was selected by the Central Propaganda Department as a typical publicity model to practice the concept of "two mountains". In October 2022, the White headed Leaf Monkey Reserve was proposed by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration to be recognized as a national youth nature education green camp. At the beginning of November this year, Chongzuo City launched the first publicity week for the protection of white headed langurs, and carried out activities such as "entering the community, campus, and network" for the protection and publicity of white headed langurs, as well as research and learning practices for the protection of white headed langurs, to educate and guide the public to get close to nature, care for nature, and protect nature. "Through a variety of conservation measures, the population of white headed langur has grown steadily over the years, from more than 300 in the early 1980s to more than 1400 now," said Chen Guangen, director of Chongzuo Municipal Forestry Bureau.
