At about 12:20 on the 8th, the Returning Officer of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center and the election of the sixth chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region solemnly announced. As soon as the voice fell, warm applause broke out at the scene. This applause not only congratulated Hong Kong on the successful completion of the first round of three important elections under the new electoral system, but also applauded Hong Kong for taking another key step towards good governance. In the election of the sixth chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held on the same day, Li Jiachao was elected as the candidate for the sixth chief executive. This is the first Chief Executive election since the improvement of Hong Kong's electoral system and another important successful practice of democracy with Hong Kong characteristics. "Cast a vote of responsibility for the future of Hong Kong!" From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. that day, members of the election committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region successively came to the Convention and Exhibition Center to vote by secret ballot on candidate Li Jiachao in the form of one person, one vote. Annex I to the basic law of Hong Kong stipulates that the Chief Executive shall be elected by an election committee with broad representation, in line with the actual situation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and reflecting the overall interests of society, and shall be appointed by the Central People's government. Under the new electoral system, the quorum of the election committee is 1500, and candidates must obtain more than 750 support votes before they can be elected. The central counting station in the Convention and Exhibition Center has a solemn and warm atmosphere. The starting ticket and announcement platform are set up in the center in front of the hall. On the huge background board, the five-star red flag and Bauhinia district flag are dazzling. After the voting, the staff counted and confirmed the votes one by one manually. Under the supervision of the Hong Kong SAR Election Commission, the election commission, candidates and their agents, the media and the public, the election and counting of votes were conducted in a tense and orderly manner. The counting results showed that Li Jiachao received 1416 support votes. Li Jiachao, 64, resigned as Chief Secretary for administration of the SAR Government in April this year and signed up for the election. After the election results were announced, Li Jiachao stood on the announcement platform of the central counting station and bowed to the members of the election committee and representatives of Hong Kong citizens present. He delivered his election speech on the spot and sincerely thanked every election committee present to vote and the Hong Kong people in front of the TV for their support and encouragement. In his election platform, Li Jiachao stressed "strengthening the governance capacity of the government and uniting to solve the difficulties of the people". He proposed that the future policy will aim at results, bring to the government that the people will do things and do things, comprehensively enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness and lay a solid foundation for Hong Kong's development. In an interview with reporters after the election results, Deng Fei, a member of the election committee, said that Hong Kong ushered in the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland in 2022, which is of great significance as a link between the past and the future. In the next five years, Hong Kong urgently needs to consolidate and grasp the stable environment from chaos to governance, crack deep-seated contradictions and reach a new level of development. "The election committee members are looking forward to the governance team of the new SAR government, uniting all sectors of society, seizing the opportunity and turning a new page of governance and prosperity under 'patriots governing Hong Kong'." The term of office of the sixth chief executive of the HKSAR is from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2027. (Xinhua News Agency)
