China ASEAN trade bucked the trend and boosted regional economic recovery

2022-02-02

In the context of global COVID-19's repeated and global economic slowdown, China and ASEAN trade scale in 2021 has been on the upswing and has reached a new high. According to the latest data recently released by the General Administration of Customs of China, in US dollars, the total import and export value between China and ASEAN in 2021 was about US $878.207 billion, an increase of 28.1% over the previous year. Many analysts said that the closer trade relations between China and ASEAN will continue to create new development opportunities and help regional economic recovery. "It is clear from the data that ASEAN's exports to China have increased significantly. Against the background of the impact of the epidemic on the global economy, China's economy is still showing a positive development trend and has become the most reliable strategic partner of ASEAN countries to promote economic recovery." Bima udistila, director general of the economic and legal research center of the Indonesian think tank, told Xinhua that the trade relations between China and ASEAN have created opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in ASEAN member countries. In particular, through the e-commerce platform, they can better explore the Chinese market and constantly provide new growth points for bilateral trade. Data show that in 2021, the trade scale between China and Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, increased by 58.6% year-on-year, and China continues to become Indonesia's largest trading partner. Ricky averianto, global marketing director of Indonesia Maida group, said, "with the continuous strengthening of economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN and the continuous simplification of bilateral trade processes, our goods can reach the Chinese market faster." He told reporters that the biscuits, candies, coffee and other leisure foods of Maida group have won more favor from Chinese consumers through multiple e-commerce platforms, and the sales volume in China has shown a positive growth trend. Fitra Faisal hastiyadi, a researcher at the school of economics of the University of Indonesia, said that for ASEAN countries including Indonesia, the strong Chinese economy is an important engine driving the development of all walks of life in the region. In the face of adverse factors such as the epidemic, China and ASEAN are "prosperous". On January 1 this year, the regional comprehensive economic partnership agreement (RCEP) came into force, marking the formal establishment of the free trade zone with the largest global economic volume and development potential. Fitra said that the entry into force of RCEP reflected "the victory of multilateralism". He said that China is one of the first member states to complete the RCEP approval process, which fully reflects China's adherence to the concept of inclusive development and believes that China ASEAN trade "will continue to reach a new level in the future".
