The United States is building a "Constellation" class missile frigate

2024-03-04

On February 27th, the website of the bimonthly issue of National Interest reported that the Constellation class frigate currently under construction is a multi-purpose missile frigate of the United States Navy, based on the design of the European Multipurpose frigate (FREMM) used by the French and Italian navies. The Constellation class frigate is scheduled to enter service in 2026, with one currently under construction and six under order. The US Navy hopes to build a total of 20 Constellation class frigates. In July 2017, the US Navy announced the FFG (X) frigate project in a request for information from the Department of Defense. This project is a plan to deploy a new type of missile frigate. Five shipbuilding companies have submitted design proposals for a new type of frigate. The winning bid was announced in April 2020, and Marinett Maritime won the contract with FREMM's improved design. After winning the bid by Marinett Maritime, the project was renamed FFG-62 from FFG (X), named after the first ship's hull number of the Constellation class frigate. The budget proposal proposed by the US Navy for the FFG-62 project suggests that the cost of each Constellation class frigate should be between $850 million and $950 million. According to the report, due to the US Navy's request to accelerate the development of the Constellation class frigate, designers did not have time to start designing from scratch. Therefore, they designed based on the existing "mother ship". The US Department of Defense's request for information does not specify what specific capabilities the frigate will possess. However, there are reasonable expectations for the specific tasks that the Constellation class frigates will carry out, including destroying enemy surface vessels, detecting enemy submarines, using active and passive electronic warfare systems, and resisting swarms of small boat attacks. In addition, the US Navy needs a surface vessel that can keep up with the US supercarrier when designing the Constellation class frigate. In addition, to keep up with the pace of supercarriers, the United States also needs a surface vessel equipped with sensing devices, so that the entire fleet can carry out operations with enhanced and expanded tactical awareness. According to reports, FFG (X) is typically assigned to strike groups and surface action groups led by large surface combat ships, but it also has the ability to defend itself during independent operations and is connected to and supported by the fleet's tactical grid.
