2024-02-18

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin was granted parole on the 18th. At around 6 o'clock that day, the reporter saw outside the Thai police hospital in Bangkok that Thaksin, who was receiving treatment and serving his sentence at the hospital, left the hospital by car. On February 13th, Thai Minister of Justice Tawi said that a total of 930 inmates have been granted parole approval this month, and Thaksin is one of them. The reason for approving his parole is that he is over 70 years old, suffers from serious illness, and has served more than 6 months in prison. Thai Prime Minister Saita also publicly stated that Thaksin Shinawatra was granted parole in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. Thaksin is 74 years old and served as the Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006. After being overthrown by a military coup in 2006, except for a brief return to foreign countries in 2008, Thaksin has been in long-term exile overseas. He is accused of corruption in cases of lottery fraud and illegal bank loans. In August 2023, Thaksin returned to Thailand after years of exile and was immediately arrested by the police. According to the ruling of the Supreme Court of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra was convicted of three charges and sentenced to 8 years in prison. Due to health reasons, Thaksin was transferred to the hospital for treatment on the second day of his sentence. In September of the same year, the King of Thailand reduced Thaksin's sentence to one year. (Lai Xin She)
