Ye Hailin, Vice President of the Asia Pacific and Global Strategy Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, recently attended the 14th "A Comprehensive Discussion of the World" International Issues Seminar on Xinhua News Agency. He believes that the current international security situation is facing characteristics such as geopolitical contradictions that are more prone to evolve into conflict confrontation, and geopolitical conflicts that lead to non-traditional security issues. The adverse impact of security issues on the current international situation needs to be taken seriously. The 14th "On the World" International Issues Seminar of Xinhua News Agency was recently held at the headquarters of Xinhua News Agency in Beijing. The picture shows Ye Hailin, Vice President of the Asia Pacific and Global Strategy Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, giving a keynote speech. According to Ye Hailin, photographed by Chen Jie from Xinhua News Agency, there are at least three aspects of the world we are in today, whether it is global or regional affairs, that everyone can experience. One reason is that traditional geopolitical conflicts are more likely to evolve into military conflicts and security confrontations, such as the Russia Ukraine issue, the Palestine Israel issue, and even internal issues in some countries can easily lead to more intensified conflicts. To put it vividly, it means "not speaking when you feel like you can do something", which is indeed a problem that needs attention. Secondly, traditional geopolitical conflicts can lead to non-traditional security issues. For example, we saw the food and energy crisis after the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the Red Sea shipping security crisis after the Palestinian Israeli conflict. These phenomena are the result of the intensification of geopolitical contradictions and regional issues, and their harm is as significant as the impact of geopolitical conflicts themselves. The secondary consequences caused by the Israeli Palestinian conflict are now very serious and may even worsen. Thirdly, some international conflicts and conflicting interests that were not traditionally seen as security issues are now rising to become major security issues. For example, trade and technology frictions, more typical of which is the chip issue, have now become a focal point of contradictions. "From these perspectives, the impact of security issues on our era can be felt by everyone. Implementing global security initiatives is a very important aspect of China's peripheral diplomacy in the coming years," said Ye Hailin. (Lai Xin She)
