Building a Bridge of Friendship with Benevolence and Benevolence - China's Foreign Aid Medical Team Wins Praise in Africa

2024-01-05

The 60th anniversary commemoration and commendation conference of the dispatch of Chinese medical aid teams was recently held in Beijing. For over half a century, generations of medical workers have entered Africa, providing medical assistance to local patients with benevolence and helping to improve local medical technology, building a bridge of friendship between China and Africa. In June 2022, Wang Baoxiang, the captain of the 19th batch of medical teams assisting China and Africa, and his teammates arrived in the capital of the Central African Republic, Bangui. The local security situation is unstable, and medical conditions are backward. "Many patients came to seek help with last hope," he recalled. There was once a 5-year-old girl who was at risk of having her eyes removed due to extensive infection caused by injuries. Wang Baoxiang and the team members urgently discussed measures and decided to adopt an anti infection and eye protection treatment plan. The surgical risk is high, and medical team members are more determined. The team members fought tirelessly on the operating table for 90 minutes, successfully treating the wound and saving the girl's eyes. After the surgery, they also provided antibiotic assisted treatment free of charge to promote wound recovery. On the day of discharge, the girl's parents tightly held the hands of the doctors to express gratitude. According to statistics, the medical team has completed more than 20000 emergency services in Bangui, carried out more than 800 surgeries, and rescued 17 critically ill patients. In Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, the local population is often plagued by diseases such as pneumonia and malaria, while healthcare workers face challenges such as limited medical equipment and drug shortages. Batch after batch of Chinese medical teams have rushed to Equatorial Guinea to provide assistance for the local people to overcome their illnesses and pains. Xu Yangying, from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, is an anesthesiologist in the 32nd batch of medical teams assisting Equatorial Guinea. She performed preoperative anesthesia with her local colleague Diosdado. Two people cooperate with each other to deal with various emergency situations. "There was an elderly person who suddenly had a sudden cardiac arrest while preparing for surgery!" Xu Yangying recalled, before Diosdado could react, he had rushed forward to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the patient, but the electrocardiogram showed no fluctuations. Diosdado remembers that Xu Yangying repeatedly bent down to rescue, and sweat soaked his back. After nearly 40 minutes of rescue, the old man finally regained his heartbeat. Diosdado said, "Chinese doctors have not given up, they are very professional. Xu Yangying is my teacher." According to data provided by the 32nd batch of Chinese medical teams assisting Equatorial Guinea, as of the end of November 2023, the team has received about 65000 patients, participated in about 9600 surgeries, conducted 8 charity consultations, and held about 70 exchange activities and training sessions. In Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, the Chinese medical team has played an important role in improving the medical level of local hospitals. In October 2022, when the 24th batch of Chinese medical teams assisting Mozambique arrived at Maputo Central Hospital, they found that the hospital's medical level urgently needed to be improved. "The treatment ability for critically ill patients and major difficult surgeries is insufficient, the department lacks systematic discipline construction, and the talent team and professional construction are also insufficient," recalled Dr. Zhang Hao, the captain of the medical team. To this end, the medical team not only needs to explain the current situation and key points of difficult case research, help establish systematic diagnostic and therapeutic analysis thinking, but also participate in the implementation of difficult and major surgeries, personally guide, and standardize operating procedures. They also conduct smart simulations through remote diagnosis and treatment platforms
