The Chinese Wisdom of Continuing the Tanzanian Railway Spirit and Jointly Creating the Road of African Prosperity

2023-11-23

[The decade of the "the Belt and Road"] In the 1970s, China helped build the Tazara Railway in Africa. This railway is not only the "freedom road" for the African people to achieve national independence and liberation, but also the historical witness for the Chinese and African people to work together, work together and be friendly from generation to generation. Over the past half century, especially since the launch of the "the Belt and Road" in Africa, Chinese civil engineers who had participated in the construction of the Tazara Railway have continued the spirit of the Tazara Railway. With firm faith, extraordinary perseverance and tenacious struggle, they have built a three-dimensional interconnection network of land, sea and sky, including railways, roads, bridges, docks, etc., and together with the African people, they have created a road to prosperity. The Addis Ababa Djibouti Railway Project, the lifeline of the East African Plateau, is the first "Chinese standard" railway in the whole industry chain overseas, the flagship project of the "the Belt and Road", and is known as the "Tanzania Zambia Railway in the New Era". The route starts from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in the west and connects to the port of neighboring Djibouti in the east, with a total length of 752 kilometers. The Fuzhou Design Institute of China Civil Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "CCECC") has undertaken the survey, design, and optimization work of the 203.5 kilometer Ethiopian section and 38.6 kilometer Djibouti section, which is a typical "built in China" and "designed in China" project. The construction of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway began in 2012, and the entire line was opened to traffic in 2016. It was put into operation in 2018. The opening of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway has opened up a major sea railway passage for Ethiopia, reducing the time for goods to arrive in Ethiopia from Djibouti Port from "3 to 7 days" to "within 1 day", and reducing transportation costs by at least 30%. At present, the freight volume of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway accounts for about 40% of the total import and export cargo transportation in Ethiopia, initially serving as the "transportation artery" of Ethiopia and Djibouti. The advantages of high efficiency and low cost of the railway have been preliminarily demonstrated. Peng Danyang, Secretary of the Party Working Committee and General Manager of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway Operation and Maintenance Company, stated that since the second quarter of 2022, the international crude oil market prices have continued to rise, and the Ethiopian government has experienced severe fuel shortages. There is no oil supply at gas stations, and road transportation is basically stagnant. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway fully utilizes the advantages of electrification and actively organizes the transportation of edible oil, fertilizers, and other materials. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway fully guarantees the import of food, fertilizers, and epidemic prevention materials from Ethiopia, helping the Ethiopian government stabilize people's livelihoods, fight against the epidemic, and ensure growth. It has made outstanding contributions to the economic development of Ethiopia and Djibouti. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway has become the national economic artery of Ethiopia and Djibouti, and the lifeline of the Ethiopian people. Nigeria is a West African country located at the western peak of the Gulf of Guinea, with the largest population and largest economy in Africa. Adhering to the indomitable spirit of the Tanzanian Railway, a large number of key cooperation projects such as the Aka Railway, the Abuja Urban Railway, the four new international terminal projects, and the Lagos Light Rail Blue Line Phase I have taken root here. Chinese design and solutions have built a bridge between the people, making positive contributions to local economic development, increasing employment, and improving people's livelihoods. The Abuja Urban Rail Project is the first urban rail transit project in West Africa, designed and constructed using Chinese standards
