Artificial intelligence faces challenges in the field of work

2023-11-21

Deloitte recently released its 2023 "Digital Consumer Trends" research report, revealing the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in daily life by consumers aged 18 to 75 worldwide, including Belgium. A survey shows that artificial intelligence has a place in personal life, but faces significant challenges in the workplace. This study shows that in Belgium, approximately 1 out of 4 people frequently use artificial intelligence technology, which is about 23%, while 1 out of 20 people use artificial intelligence technology every day. However, up to 71% of respondents stated that they only use this technology in their personal lives, such as searching for recipes, inquiring about the weather on the day, and even reading daily news. Among those who have tried generative artificial intelligence, only 29% use it for vocational or educational activities, accounting for 7% of the total population. This trend indicates that artificial intelligence has been widely used in personal life and still has limitations in the workplace. With the widespread application of artificial intelligence technology, people are beginning to worry about whether this technology will have a negative impact on employment in the future. Among them, 49% of respondents are worried that their work will be replaced by algorithms, while only 23% of respondents express no such idea. This concern highlights people's complex psychology towards artificial intelligence. On the one hand, they place high hopes on artificial intelligence to create more spiritual and material wealth for society, and on the other hand, they are also concerned that artificial intelligence may have a negative impact on the labor market in the future. Although artificial intelligence has great potential for development, this study also reveals a lack of awareness among users of its limitations. About one-third of the respondents believe that artificial intelligence tools can always provide accurate answers that are consistent with the facts. However, this is not the case. Vincent Foster, the head of technology and telecommunications at Deloitte, pointed out that "the assumption that artificial intelligence will not make mistakes is problematic because the current market for generative artificial intelligence tools is based on language models, which may make incorrect predictions. For example, models may output sentences that do not match the facts, but due to contextual factors, these sentences may seem very credible to some readers, Because artificial intelligence highly relies on the data it receives, if users provide biased data, artificial intelligence will use it to define the results, and the results themselves will also have biases. To further raise public awareness of artificial intelligence and stimulate technological innovation based on artificial intelligence, the Belgian federal government and various regions have taken action. The Belgian Federal Council of Ministers approved the "National Artificial Intelligence Development Integration Plan" on October 28, 2022, aiming to ensure that the development of this new technology is carried out within an appropriate ethical and legal framework. The integration plan will focus on promoting trustworthy artificial intelligence, enhancing Belgium's competitiveness and attractiveness through artificial intelligence, and providing better services and guarantees for citizens. As a regional representative, the Walloon Region launched the "Digital Walloon AI Program" in October this year. This plan highlights the practical application of artificial intelligence in daily life or professional environments, highlighting the relationship between humans and machines
