Cultural China Tour: Dalian, Liaoning: Creating More 'Open Ways' for Shell Carving
2025-05-14
In May, Dalian, Liaoning Province welcomed a tourism boom, and the Dalian Boyi Beidiao Cultural and Creative Art Museum was bustling with visitors. In recent days, the museum has received foreign tourists from countries such as Russia, Singapore, and Japan, "director Li Shujuan told reporters." They handmade small shell carving objects under the guidance of shell carvers, such as shell necklaces, brooches, tabletop decorations, etc. "Dalian is the cradle of Chinese shell carving, and the Dalian Shell Carving Factory in the 1950s and 1960s was a key enterprise for exporting cultural products in China. With the changes of the times, generations of inheritors of shell carving craftsmanship have innovated and inherited this intangible cultural heritage art. In 2023, Dalian Boyi Shell Carving Cultural and Creative Art Museum, which integrates research and development, production, sales, and exhibition, was established. We have five generations living together, and now our disciples are all thinking about how to integrate shell carving more into people's daily lives. I firmly believe that the art of shell carving will continue to represent Dalian and China to the world. ”Pang Houcheng, the "old shell carver" who is already in his eighties, said. Feng Chengcheng, the "new shell carver," has been studying shell carving with Pang Houcheng since graduating from university. She told reporters, "Traditional shell carving products are mostly themed around mountains, waters, flowers, and birds, suitable for producing large wall paintings. My partners and I started with the theme of shell carving and developed a set of urban landscape themed products, improving every process of cutting, grinding, polishing, stacking, and pasting." Feng Chengcheng pointed to the works in the display cabinet and said, "This desktop ornament pattern is from the Dalian International Convention Center, which is also the location of the Summer Davos venue. It was once given as a gift to foreign officials attending the conference." The "Dance Whale Brooch" she designed is made of rare white plate shell carvings. Also selected as a souvenir for Chinese and foreign dignitaries at the 2024 Summer Davos Conference. With the unremitting efforts of generations of shell carving inheritors, today's shell carving products in Dalian pay more attention to exploring regional characteristics, and shell carving has become a versatile art piece with urban characteristics. Through the comprehensive application of materials, they have combined traditional shell carving with fabric, metal, wood, etc., and have developed more than 200 innovative products in 6 categories. From household items and jewelry such as chopsticks, wooden combs, necklaces, to electronic products such as photo frames and portable power banks, more and more elements are cleverly implanted into shell carvings, creating more "ways to open" for intangible cultural heritage. The governments at all levels in Dalian actively utilize various exhibitions, large-scale conferences, tourism promotions, and other opportunities to build a broad space for the dissemination of intangible cultural heritage art. The "Baiwei Nanshan", "Spring in Nanshan", "Nanshan Autumn Leaf Collection" and other characteristic street activities jointly initiated by the Zhongshan District Government and cultural and creative enterprises and managers in the jurisdiction have attracted many inheritors of intangible cultural heritage to set up stalls in the market with their works. Original handicraft shop owner Wei Ming likes traditional intangible cultural heritage crafts. She uses trendy elements as the creative theme and uses ancient intangible cultural heritage crafts to make jewelry and accessories. At the market, I met many partners who, like me, are dedicated to the innovation of intangible cultural heritage art. Everyone is working hard for their passion, "Wei Ming also told reporters." With the promotion of the government, many tourist attractions in Dalian sell the cultural and creative works of intangible cultural heritage inheritors as tourism products. Just by setting up stalls during small holidays, we can earn nearly half a year's income
