The world's largest container ship, the "Eastern Portugal", docked steadily at Yantian Port in Shenzhen on the 5th. The crew lowers the cable from the ship and connects it to the shore based ship power supply (hereinafter referred to as shore power) equipment. They turn on the ship's power conversion switch and turn off the auxiliary engine provided by the ship, thus converting it to shore power supply. In April of this year, there were only nearly 120 barge connections at Yantian Port, setting a record for the highest number in a single month's history. Shore power replaces marine diesel generators with shore based power sources to provide electricity for docked ships, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 98%. In 2016, with the assistance of Shenzhen Yantian Power Supply Bureau of Southern Power Grid, Yantian Port built and began using six sets of intelligent shore power systems, with a berth shore power coverage rate of over 95%. Both parties also actively explored the application of 5G, artificial intelligence, big data, and other technologies in the port power system. In 2024, the Yantian Port shore power system will provide nearly 25 million kilowatt hours of electricity to ships, reducing ship carbon emissions by approximately 19000 tons. In the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, including Yantian Port, many ports are vigorously promoting the transition towards a new green direction, including shore power coverage, clean energy utilization of trailers in ports, the "oil to electricity" transformation of gantry cranes, the promotion of green marine fuels, digitalization, and automation applications. Entering the Mawan Smart Port Container Terminal located in the western port area of Shenzhen, one can see automated gantry cranes loading and unloading goods in an orderly manner, and autonomous trucks shuttling through the operation area according to instructions, smoothly transporting containers. The dock site is busy and orderly, and the on-site lighthouse has installed 5G base stations covering the whole Hong Kong, providing reliable and stable signal guarantee for the efficient operation of the port. Liu Hao, Senior Development Manager of the Operations Department of China Merchants Port (South China) Operation Center, introduced that after completing the intelligent transformation in 2021, Mawan Smart Port has gathered 9 intelligent elements such as China Merchants Core Operating System and Beidou System, and achieved significant results: reduced personnel dispatch and attendance, reduced safety risks, significantly reduced carbon emissions, and greatly improved operational efficiency. At Chiwan Port in Shenzhen, over 60 new energy trailers have been deployed and equipped with battery swapping stations, which can automatically replace the power battery pack of a single vehicle in just 3 minutes; In the third phase of Nansha Port in Guangzhou, more than 150 large port machinery, including electric shore cranes, track cranes, yard cranes, and gantry cranes, have been fully covered by electric drive, and the promotion and application of new energy production equipment continue to be increased. Our current proportion of new energy equipment has reached about 50%, and we are controlling the carbon emissions of the port from the source, "said the staff of the third phase of Nansha Port. In 2023, the Department of Transport of Guangdong Province issued the "Guangdong Province Green Port Action Plan (2023-2025)", proposing that by 2025, Guangdong Province will initially form a green and low-carbon production mode for ports; The 2024 Hong Kong Policy Address also mentioned for the first time the acceleration of the construction of a green shipping center. As an international shipping center, Hong Kong is actively taking action to cooperate with other ports in the Greater Bay Area to build a green marine fuel refueling center and a green shipping corridor, including the release of the Action Plan for Green Marine Fuel Refueling and the implementation of the 2024 Ship Regulations (Fuel Use and Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance. In February of this year, the "New Alto Putuo" LNG refueling vessel loaded with 2200 tons of liquefied natural gas fuel completed export procedures and left the Shenzhen Diefu LNG receiving station to Hong Kong to participate in the completion of Hong Kong's first "ship to ship" liquefied natural gas refueling operation. Chen Meibao, the Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, posted on her blog that two more commercial liquefied natural gas refueling operations were successfully completed in Hong Kong waters in March, indicating that the shipping industry has cast a vote of trust in Hong Kong's new role as a green marine fuel refueling center. Industry insiders say that with the transformation of industrial institutions, the development of Hong Kong's maritime industry has also ushered in a new opportunity for upgrading. On the one hand, innovative technology and digital development are conducive to improving the quality and efficiency of the shipping industry; On the other hand, green and sustainable development can promote Hong Kong's energy transformation. I am confident in the prospects of promoting green shipping and green ports in Hong Kong. ”Liu Yang, a member of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Authority, believes that the recent amendment of relevant laws by the SAR government to allow ships to safely use and refuel low-carbon or even zero carbon green fuels demonstrates strong determination and action in promoting green shipping and green port development.
