Hundreds of lilacs filling the streets and alleys
2025-05-06
Lilac is the city flower of Xining, the capital city of Qinghai Province, with beautiful pigments, pleasant fragrance, and elegant appearance. Every April to June, lilacs bloom throughout the city, interweaving white, purple, pink, and yellow layers upon layers, decorating the streets with exceptional beauty. I am a native of Qinghai. In my childhood memories, my hometown was yellow soil, and the barren land could not grow green trees or flowers. Xining, located on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, has a cold and dry climate, a fragile ecological environment, and it is not easy to grow a tree. When I first started working, I looked at the bare mountains of the north and south, the fragile vegetation of the city, and saw that the saplings planted had not changed for several months, which made me feel anxious. At that time, I thought about making my hometown green and beautiful through my own efforts. The growth cycle of trees is long, and it is difficult to see results in the short term. My colleagues and I have tried our best to improve the survival rate of afforestation. From seedling selection to transplanting and breeding, we take care of these small green seedlings like children, observe whether they adapt to the plateau climate, and find suitable cultivation methods for different varieties... Finally, with everyone's joint efforts, Xining is green. Green is the foundation of beauty, and breeding flowers suitable for Xining's phenology has become our next goal. The cultivation history of lilacs, which are cold resistant, drought resistant, and adaptable, can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty in Xining. The first time I really saw lilacs was in 1985, when they bloomed quietly in heavy rain. Looking back now, it's still a shock. It was also in that year that Dingxiang was selected as the city flower of Xining. Our work involves introducing clove varieties from other regions to enrich the variety of plateau plants, as well as investigating and collecting wild clove resources to create conditions for the protection and utilization of clove germplasm resources. As an important natural distribution area of the Syringa genus, Xining is home to six species of Syringa, including the feather leaved Syringa and the small leaved Quercus, accounting for over a quarter of the total distribution in China. Due to the influence of natural environment and human activities, many wild clove varieties are at risk of endangered or even extinct, and it is crucial to establish a clove germplasm resource bank. Every year during the lilac flowering season, my colleagues and I would divide into several groups to conduct field investigations and search for wild lilacs. After returning to the laboratory, wild cloves were propagated through tissue culture and grafting, and high-quality genes were extracted from the wild varieties. Hybrid cultivation was carried out to produce clove varieties that are cold resistant, drought resistant, resistant to pests and diseases, and have a longer flowering period. In 2020, Xining Forestry Science Research Institute successfully established the first national germplasm resource bank for cloves in China. The number of preserved clove germplasm has increased from 18 to 103, and 69 varieties can be bred. Nearly 30 new and excellent varieties have been applied in major parks, road green spaces in the urban area, greatly enriching the resources of plateau native tree species. At present, Xining is striving to build a "city of lilacs", with more and more lilacs planted in the streets and alleys of the city. This city is more green and vibrant, and the fragrant flowers bring beautiful enjoyment to citizens and tourists, especially tourists from all over the world standing under the lilac trees to check in. This scene makes me feel proud. I will continue to work hard for the ecological protection and integration of culture and tourism in Xining, and help continuously polish Xining's urban identity card.
