Du Shilin (first from left) and Li Wenting (first from right) take a photo in front of Tiananmen Square. Recently, at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, photographed by Zhang Peng. The morning breeze is gentle, and the national anthem is played. Faced with the rising five-star red flag, the two veteran soldiers who came from Handan, Hebei Province to participate in the war had tears in their eyes, raised their right hands, and saluted with a standard military salute. Coincidentally, both veterans were born in 1926 and are from Hebei province. Li Wenting, a veteran who participated in the Liberation War and the Korean War, was demobilized and returned to Handan in 1955 to build his hometown. In his later years, he was invited to serve as a volunteer guide at the 129th Division Memorial Hall of the Eighth Route Army. Veteran Du Shilin, who participated in the War of Resistance Against Japan and the War of Liberation, was discharged from the army at the end of 1947 due to injuries and returned to his hometown of Handan to farm. On the battlefield, Li Wenting and Du Shilin once made an agreement with their comrades: in the future, when there is peace, the living will go to visit the capital Beijing on behalf of their fallen comrades. However, due to various reasons, the two have been unable to make it. On the eve of this year's Qingming Festival, Handan City invited Li Wenting, Du Shilin, and veteran soldiers from Beijing, Fang, and Yang Peishan, to conduct national defense education for local primary and secondary school students. At the Jin Ji Lu Yu Martyrs Cemetery, four veterans and Young Pioneers paid their respects to the Martyrs Memorial and laid flowers at the martyrs' tomb. Is the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square also that high? ”Looking up at the monument in front of them, the two veterans couldn't help but ask. Listening to Fang Laiting and Yang Peishan talk about the rapid development and changes in the capital city of Beijing, the two veterans were filled with longing. They said, "I hope to visit Tiananmen Square in Beijing in my lifetime and pay tribute to the national flag and Chairman Mao." This scene was remembered by the volunteers of the Handan Old Area Construction Promotion Association who participated in the event together. Under the guidance of the Veterans Affairs Department of Handan City, they contacted Mingren Hospital, Handan High speed Railway Station and other units in Handan City, as well as volunteers who care for veterans in Beijing, to develop detailed travel plans, sightseeing routes, etc., ready to help the two veterans realize their dreams. On April 16th, the two veterans finally embarked on a journey to fulfill their dreams. On the day before departure, volunteer Li Huichao took two veterans to Mingren Hospital in the city for a comprehensive physical examination to ensure that their bodies were in good condition before proceeding with their planned trip to Beijing. On the early morning of April 17th, the two veterans tidied up their clothes and prepared for departure. At 4 o'clock in the morning, two veterans arrived at Tiananmen Square. Seeing the veteran sitting in a wheelchair and wearing old military uniforms, the crowd at the scene spontaneously gave up a path. At 5:35, the flag raising ceremony officially began. The two veteran soldiers stood up in silence, saluting the national flag and gazing at the slowly rising flag for a long time. When leaving Tiananmen Square, the armed police soldiers on duty noticed two veterans and saluted them. The veterans who supported each other immediately straightened their backs and saluted. Later, the two veterans paid homage to the Monument to the People's Heroes and Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall, and visited the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution. At the Military Museum, Li Wenting recognized the flag of the 12th Army of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army at a glance. He proudly told his colleagues, "I once served as the deputy squad leader of the 2nd Platoon, 9th Platoon, 2nd Platoon, 9th Battalion, 52nd Regiment, 18th Brigade of the 12th Army. This is our army flag." Seeing modern equipment such as Dongfeng series missiles and domestically produced series aircraft, the two veterans were excited and said, "Now that we have advanced weapons and equipment, no one dares to bully us anymore On the way back, riding on the speeding high-speed train and looking at the tall buildings flashing through the car window, veteran Li Wenting said with satisfaction, "We are very satisfied to see the capital Beijing for our sacrificed comrades." Veteran Du Shilin continued, "The motherland has not forgotten us, and the people have not forgotten us. Our national defense forces and military construction have achieved such development achievements, and our sacrificed comrades will definitely feel gratified
