On the annual World Book Day, multiple libraries offer new and fun activities. From hosting fun lectures to providing "smart and interesting" services, to hosting immersive exhibitions, "leading readers into a cultural journey spanning thousands of years of time and space"... This has made the library increasingly charming and popular. A survey on the reading status of Shanghai citizens showed that nearly 60% of respondents stated that the public reading facility they frequently visit is a public library. Why are public libraries so popular in Shanghai? The answer is that relevant departments are constantly expanding the functions of public libraries, making them a treasure trove. With more "gameplay" and stronger interactivity, readers' enthusiasm for participation is also more intense, and they will often come to check in and compete to "weed out". According to statistics, there were 3248 public libraries in China last year, with a total circulation of 134.197 million people. How to further leverage the public value of public libraries and encourage more people to enter the library? Shanghai's approach is worth paying attention to. Since 2014, 'National Reading' has been included in the Government Work Report for 12 consecutive years. Building a bookish society and creating a strong atmosphere of love for reading, reading good books, and being good at reading, as a cultural center of the city, public libraries should not be neglected. In January of this year, the General Office of the State Council issued the "Several Economic Policies on Promoting High Quality Development of Culture", which also proposed to "encourage the layout of cultural facilities according to local conditions, and create libraries, museums, art galleries, and science and technology museums with Chinese characteristics and world-class" and "encourage places with conditions to introduce incentive policies for providing delayed and staggered services for free open public cultural facilities, and improve the accessibility and aging adaptability of public cultural facility services". How to optimize the service capabilities of public libraries? The practices of several libraries in Shanghai are impressive. For example, Jiading District in Shanghai has launched the first pilot of intelligent elderly friendly reading scenarios, aiming to use technology around them to help the silver haired population overcome the "digital divide". Precise efforts are made to resolve pain points, improve the elderly reading service system, and create a more friendly reading atmosphere for the elderly. For example, the Baoshan District Library in Shanghai actively expands the coverage of the "Audio Library" by providing reading services at multiple bus stops, allowing citizens and tourists to "scan the code anytime and listen whenever they want" during waiting or walking breaks. These explorations not only bring wonderful reading experiences to citizens, but also provide support for building a bookish society. It is commendable that Shanghai has also extended its service reach to the Yangtze River Delta and even the whole country in exploring new ways of public libraries. This also inspires us that libraries should boldly "go global" to ignite regional culture and contribute to the construction of a bookish China. If the people read more books, our national spirit will become stronger and more profound. When public libraries become diverse spaces that can both touch the fragrance of Song Dynasty tea and engage in dialogue with AI technology, and when "audio libraries" extend to bus stops and public libraries radiate to broader areas, reading is no longer simply a matter of textual consumption, but rather a city's commitment and innovation to humanistic values. We are happy to see more innovative explorations like this, making public libraries truly a life form that allows culture to breathe and develop together with the city. (New Society)
