The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Clean Energy Supply Chain Exchange Conference was held in Hong Kong on the 23rd, bringing together over 200 representatives from the shipping industry chain in Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas. This exchange meeting is hosted by the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, focusing on three key areas of sustainable development in the shipping industry: alternative fuels, electrification, and green corridors. It focuses on exploring how to consolidate and enhance Hong Kong's position as an international shipping center, and to comply with the requirements of the net zero emissions framework proposed by the 83rd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC83) of the International Maritime Organization. Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Leung Chun ying, stated in his speech that the development of Hong Kong's port and shipping industry is closely linked to the development of the country, and contributes to the country's development without the support of the state. The further development of Hong Kong's shipping industry requires transformation, close regular dialogue and experience sharing with the mainland, strengthening coordinated development with neighboring mainland ports, and playing the role of a "super contact" connecting the mainland and overseas. Chen Meibao, Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, stated that in order to establish a green shipping ecosystem, Hong Kong needs to gather relevant parties and talents. The Hong Kong shipping industry is actively promoting talent development programs, and the Marine Department has established a dedicated team to provide one-stop services for relevant organizations. Green shipping professionals have also been included in the talent list of the SAR government. Zhao Shiqing, Chairman of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Executive Chairman of Huaguang Shipping, believes that with the establishment of the carbon reduction policy framework under MEPC83 and the establishment of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Council, the government looks forward to deeper and more effective cooperation between the industry in the areas of green corridors, electrification, and alternative energy in the future. The President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Ye Yuru, stated that the International Maritime Organization has set the goal of achieving net zero emissions in the shipping industry by 2050, which requires extensive cooperation across fields, disciplines, and regions. At present, USTC is promoting the green transformation of the shipping industry and collaborating with the industry to promote the digital revolution of the shipping industry. The Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Industry proposes to support the development of Hong Kong as a green fuel trading, refueling, and certification center, and promote global certification standards. We look forward to all parties working together to further leverage the platform role of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in terms of industrial scale, innovation ecology, and strategic location.
