Griffon Multi Purpose Armored Vehicle: The "Griffon" Born from the Scorpion

The picture shows the Griffon "griffin" multi-purpose armored vehicle. In February of this year, Belgium received the first Griffon "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle (hereinafter referred to as the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle) that was fully assembled in Belgium, in accordance with a bilateral agreement reached with France earlier. According to the agreement, Belgium will acquire hundreds of armored vehicles and self-propelled artillery, including the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle, in the future. It is worth mentioning that the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicles delivered to Belgium are also equipped with the combat information system selected by the "Scorpion" program. In 2010, the French government announced the launch of the "Scorpion" program. The plan aims to enhance the comprehensive combat capability of the country's army by purchasing new information and networked tanks or upgrading existing tanks with new communication and command and control systems. The "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle is a product of the "Scorpion" program and an important component of the program. In order to enable the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle to replace the current VAB 4 × 4 armored personnel carriers and meet the requirements of the "Scorpion" program, the development team has adopted various methods to enhance the performance of the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle. Under the cooperation between KNDS France and two other defense companies, the successfully developed "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle adopts a 6 × 6 wheel layout, further enhancing its carrying capacity and maneuverability. Its maximum highway speed can reach 90 kilometers per hour, with a range of 800 kilometers. The relatively compact appearance combined with a combat weight of 25 tons allows it to be quickly deployed through A-400M transport aircraft. The "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle has strong protection capabilities and can withstand attacks from 14.5mm armor piercing shells and shell fragments under certain conditions. It can also further enhance its protection level by optional additional armor. Not only that, the vehicle is also equipped with a laser warning system, missile proximity detector, and gunshot detector. When needed, it can also launch multi-purpose smoke bombs or use electronic countermeasures to respond to threats. Due to its modular design, the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle can be optionally equipped with remote-controlled weapon stations, mortars, and anti tank missiles to meet different battlefield needs. In addition to personnel transport, the vehicle can also be modified into six models: command vehicle, artillery reconnaissance vehicle, medical evacuation vehicle, mortar vehicle, etc. For example, equipped with a mine sweeping device or other specific kit, it can transform into a Genie type combat engineering vehicle for handling explosives or providing other support. To meet the needs of modern battlefields, the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle, like other vehicles in the "Scorpion" program, has been equipped with the SICS combat information system to achieve coordinated combat between each other. With the help of this system, it can achieve real-time data sharing with equipment such as the "Panther" armored reconnaissance vehicle and the "Caesar" self-propelled artillery, forming a systematic combat capability. While striving to improve the performance of tank equipment, the development team is also working hard to control the costs of research and use. For example, the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle adopts a relatively mature truck chassis and power unit, while the "Panther" armored reconnaissance vehicle has 70% of the same components as the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle. To some extent, it is precisely because of the "Scorpion" program that the performance of the "Griffon" multi-purpose armored vehicle has been improved, which has led to Belgium purchasing 400 units of this type of vehicle through a bilateral agreement.
