Guarding the 'history books engraved on stones'

2025-04-24

The Yungang Grottoes, located in Datong, Shanxi, have a history of more than 1500 years and can be regarded as a "historical book carved on stone". In recent years, Shanxi has strengthened the protection and research of Yungang Grottoes, continuously improved the scientific level of protection and restoration, and deeply explored its historical and cultural heritage. The Yungang Research Institute, which shoulders the mission of guarding the Yungang Grottoes, has been carrying the heavy responsibility of protecting, researching, and managing the caves since its official establishment in 2021. The staff of Yungang Research Institute shuttle between caves, conducting meticulous monitoring and restoration of statues of all sizes. They applied advanced restoration techniques to address issues such as weathering and fading of murals in grottoes, restoring their former glory. The power of technology injects new energy into the protection of Yungang Grottoes. There are currently 45 main caves and over 59000 statues of various sizes in the Yungang Grottoes. With the help of cutting-edge technology in the field of cultural relic protection, 80% of caves have achieved fully digital preservation. High pixel digital cameras, 3D laser scanners, and other instruments are used to digitally transform the details of grottoes. The Yungang Grottoes, which have come from the depths of history, have opened a new chapter under the careful protection and innovative transformation of contemporary people. (New Society)
