The output value of nuclear technology applications in China is expected to reach trillions of yuan by 2025

2025-04-22

On April 21st, the first China Gulf Cooperation Council Forum on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology was held in Chengdu, Sichuan. Huang Ping, Secretary General of the National Atomic Energy Agency of China, revealed that the output value of nuclear technology applications in China is expected to reach one trillion yuan by 2025. Huang Ping said that China has a complete industrial chain innovation chain system in the field of nuclear technology applications, covering nearly 40 sub fields such as medical isotopes, accelerators, radiation sources, nuclear equipment, irradiation applications, and characteristic nuclear medicine. A complete industrial system from research and development to application has been formed. According to estimates, the output value of nuclear technology applications in China has increased from 300 billion yuan in 2015 to nearly 700 billion yuan in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of over 15%. In 2024, the National Atomic Energy Agency and twelve other departments jointly released the "Three Year Action Plan for High Quality Development of Nuclear Technology Application Industry (2024-2026)", proposing to focus on the application of nuclear technology in key directions or fields such as medical diagnosis and treatment, agricultural breeding, food processing, material modification, security inspection, etc., break through a number of key technologies, build a number of innovative platforms, and cultivate a number of specialized, refined, and new enterprises. The Chinese nuclear technology application industry has entered a period of rapid expansion, with an expected market size of trillions by 2025, injecting strong momentum into the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries. Huang Ping introduced that in recent years, the National Atomic Energy Agency has taken multiple measures to target bottlenecks and weaknesses, organize scientific research and development tasks, promote the significant improvement of nuclear technology application and innovation level, and continuously enhance its ability to develop upstream in the industrial chain, value chain, and innovation chain. For example, during the COVID-19, the irradiation sterilization technology reduced the sterilization cycle of medical protective articles from 7-14 days to less than 1 day, effectively ensuring the emergency supply of medical protective clothing; In terms of isotope production, high specific activity medical cobalt-60 sources have been localized, and carbon-14 irradiation targets have been mass-produced for the first time, accelerating the independent supply of radioactive isotopes; In the field of nuclear medicine, the first domestically produced heavy ion cancer treatment demonstration device has been put into clinical application, the world's first panoramic dynamic PET-CT imaging system has entered clinical validation, and significant progress has been made in the development of multiple radiopharmaceuticals. This forum is hosted by the National Atomic Energy Agency of China and attended by representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council member countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, as well as neighboring countries such as Pakistan.
