Sino Italian enterprises sign high-end shipbuilding contracts in Hong Kong

2025-04-11

China Merchants Industrial Group, a subsidiary of China Merchants Group, recently signed a contract with Italy's Grimaldi Group in Hong Kong to build 9 ships. By creating the world's first high-end passenger roll on/roll off ships equipped with methanol dual fuel, it provides a new generation of high-end green solutions for the global shipping industry. It is reported that 9 passenger roll on/roll off ships are planned to be delivered gradually from 2028 to 2030. This project is the core project of Grimaldi Group's "Next Generation Passenger Ro Ship Plan", aiming to create a ship with high capacity, low carbon emissions, and cruise class comfort through innovative design and technological upgrades. It is designed and constructed by using methanol instead of fuel propulsion system, installing desulfurization tower, and reserving installation space for large capacity batteries to meet the emission standards of the International Maritime Organization and relevant regulations of the European Union. Miao Jianmin, Chairman of China Merchants Group, stated that it will gather top R&D teams, lean manufacturing systems, and full lifecycle service systems to ensure high-quality project delivery. China Merchants Group is willing to continue to deepen cooperation with Grimaldi Group in cutting-edge fields such as zero carbon fuels and intelligent ships, and jointly provide more efficient and sustainable shipping solutions for global customers. Grimaldi, Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping and Managing Director of Grimaldi Group, stated that the use of methanol as an alternative fuel in 9 passenger roll on/roll off ships has shown outstanding performance in reducing emissions, which will promote the group to approach the global net zero emission target more closely. The group highly recognizes the technology of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises in the field of high-end roll on/roll off ships, and this signing further strengthens the determination to cooperate with Chinese shipbuilding enterprises. China Merchants Industry and Grimaldi Group have joined hands to build more than 30 energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced roll on/roll off ships. Both parties agree to take this as an opportunity to further expand their cooperation in areas such as shipping, logistics, and ports. Grimaldi Group is one of the world's largest integrated logistics groups, specializing in maritime transportation of automobiles, roll on/roll off cargo, containers, and passenger transport, operating over 130 ships.
