On April 10th local time, the 12th ASEAN Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting issued a joint statement emphasizing that ASEAN countries will work together to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic future for the region. The statement pointed out that against the backdrop of slowing inflation, strong domestic demand, stable investment activity, strong export performance, and favorable employment conditions continue to support the economic performance of ASEAN. It is expected that the region will maintain resilience amidst ongoing external headwinds. However, ASEAN has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the additional tariffs recently announced by the United States. Given the economic openness of ASEAN member countries and their dependence on foreign trade, factors such as slowing global economic growth, shrinking international trade, and reduced investment inflows may have a negative impact on the growth prospects of the region. The statement stated that the uncertainty brought about by the imposition of tariffs and potential retaliatory measures may exacerbate capital flows and exchange rate fluctuations. ASEAN is closely monitoring this situation and is ready to respond to such fluctuations if necessary. In the context of increasing global uncertainty, ASEAN reiterates its commitment to enhancing financial resilience, accelerating financial integration within ASEAN, and supporting further development of trade and investment integration within ASEAN. ASEAN calls on international financial institutions to pay more attention to the risks posed by tariff increases to the global economy and provide recommendations to its member countries on appropriate policy tools to address these risks. ASEAN reaffirms its continued commitment to an open, inclusive, and rule-based multilateral trading system, as well as ASEAN economic integration. (New Society)
