The East and West converge, and the music is boundless. On April 1st, the Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra Annual Concert 2025 was held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, bringing a musical feast that blends classical music, choral art, technological innovation, and profound emotional resonance to nearly 1200 listeners. As a pioneer in interdisciplinary research in the field of music creation, Baptist University brought the "laboratory" to the anniversary concert venue, deeply integrating music and neuroscience through innovative technology. When the orchestra performed the fourth movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major, "Fierce", they used a portable "functional near-infrared spectroscopy" (fNIRS) instrument to monitor the blood oxygen saturation of the performer's brain in real time using near-infrared light, thereby capturing the performer's brain activity. Through AI technology, the brainwaves were converted into dynamic visual images, creating a unique music experience for the audience and showcasing the stunning fusion of art and neuroscience. Its advantage lies in allowing performers to fully immerse themselves in the natural music performance environment, thereby obtaining more realistic data for comprehensive research. Professor Pan Minglun, wearing a portable "Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy" (fNIRS) instrument, will perform at a concert deeply rooted in classical and choral art. However, with the support of innovative ideas, the audience's visual and emotional experiences are quietly elevated. This rich and immersive performance reveals the complex and profound connection between sound and brain thinking, which not only touches the soul but also inspires thinking, opening up new possibilities for art. The concert will use "functional near-infrared spectroscopy" technology to convert brain waves into dynamic visual images. The Vice President of HKBU (interdisciplinary research) and the Dean of the School of Creative Arts will serve as the conductors of this concert. In addition, the event invited Spanish violinist Raquel Areal Mart í nez to perform as a solo guest, passionately interpreting the classic work of German Romantic master Max Bruch, "Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor", Op. 26. The first movement of the work is full of emotion and passion, the middle slow movement is highly expressive, and the final passionate chapter pushes the concert to a climax, fully demonstrating the performer's outstanding musical talent and superb skills. Spanish violinist Raquel Areal Mart í nez served as a solo guest for the Baptist Chamber Music Choir Cantor í a Hong Kong, performing Brahms' "Why is light given to those in need?", Op. 74, No. 1, and Schoenberg's "Peace Comes to the Earth", Op. 13. The concert also presented the overture to Bernstein's classic opera 'The Honest Man'. Dr. Wong Ying ho, Chairman of the HKBU Council and Advisory Council, warmly welcomes the holding of the concert. He stated that Hong Kong, as a fertile land of creativity, is not only a convergence point of diverse civilizations, but also embodies profound hopes for the cultivation of art and the elevation of education. Therefore, this grand event is not only a celebration of music, but also a solemn commitment to social and humanistic values. Professor Wei Bingjiang, President of HKBU, stated that this concert is not only a cultural bridge connecting East and West, China and the world, but also a cradle for cultivating music talents. HKBU proudly provides a platform for the integration of art and technology, bringing unique and enriching experiences to everyone. (New Society)
