In Jiangshijia Village, Qukuhu Township, Tongren City, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, the singing style and drum music of Tibetan opera linger among the green mountains and waters all year round. During festivals such as the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year, villagers gather on the stage and fill it with crispy oil tea and barley wine to enjoy classic plays such as "Smart Beauty Ascends" and "Songtsen Gampo". Entering the Tibetan Opera Training Center in Jiangshijia Village, dressing rooms and costume rooms are set on both sides of the stage, and the performance photos on the walls record the path of Tibetan opera inheritance. Li Xiancai, the head of the folk Tibetan opera troupe in Jiangshijia Village, recalled that the Tibetan opera in Jiangshijia Village has a long history and he has loved it since childhood. The scenes of villagers working during the day and sitting around singing opera at night are shared memories of several generations. Nowadays, the transmission center not only provides a stage for folk theater troupes, but also becomes a "training ground" for young inheritors. What makes Li Xiancai feel gratified is that many "post-90s" and "post-00s" from the village have joined this year, injecting fresh blood into the theater troupe. Based on the strong cultural foundation of Tibetan opera, Qinghai Tibetan Opera Troupe was established in Huangnan Prefecture after the 1980s. Wanmo Caidan, Director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office of the Tibetan Opera Troupe, introduced that there are currently 24 folk Tibetan opera troupes in Huangnan Prefecture, with a total of over a thousand inheritors. The government has established a dynamic inheritance mechanism of "old leading new, passing on and assisting" through measures such as subsidies for inheritors and support for cross provincial tours. I used to think that Tibetan opera was something of the older generation, but now I realize that its stories are full of philosophy, and its singing style hits the heart. We have an obligation to continue to inherit excellent culture Yang Wenji, a young actor from Qinghai Tibetan Opera Troupe, said. Huangnan Tibetan Opera was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in May 2006. In 2009, Tibetan opera was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. In January 2024, the large-scale historical Tibetan opera "Princess Jincheng", which was created and arranged by the Qinghai Provincial Tibetan Opera Troupe after three years, was performed five times in a row at the Meilanfang Grand Theater in Beijing and was well received by the audience. The drama blends traditional Tibetan opera singing with epic storytelling, depicting the magnificent journey of Princess Jincheng's visit to Tibet to promote ethnic integration. Ren Qingjia, the head of the Qinghai Tibetan Opera Troupe, stated that "Princess Jincheng" incorporates modern stage design elements, with core techniques such as mask making and drum and cymbal accompaniment strictly following ancient methods. In terms of singing, music, costumes, and stage design, it fully considers the characteristics of the times and ethnic culture, striving to integrate the original appearance of historical events with the audience's sense of immersion. Since 2009, Huangnan Prefecture has established the Tibetan Opera Intangible Cultural Heritage Center to rescue endangered Tibetan opera plays, lesser known singing styles, and unique performance techniques, and to build a digital resource library for Tibetan opera. In the past 10 years, Qinghai Tibetan Opera Troupe has developed 36 large-scale performance plays, with a record high number of performances, which are deeply loved by the masses. At present, Huangnan Prefecture has 701 intangible cultural heritage projects at all levels, represented by "Huangnan Tibetan Opera" and others. With the expansion of the influence of Tibetan opera, local areas have created intangible cultural heritage themed tourism routes, exploring a path of rural revitalization that combines intangible cultural heritage and cultural tourism. Traditional Tibetan opera is the culmination of folk culture and must be developed and passed down through inheritance and development Renqing added. (New Society)
