The ancient and voluminous Chinese classics contain the wisdom, spirit, cultural context, and enduring power of the Chinese nation. Recently, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the second batch of national level ancient book restoration centers, and significant progress has been made in the restoration, protection, and resource transformation and utilization of ancient books. Today we will take a look at how these units use modern technology to assist in the protection, restoration, and comprehensive utilization of ancient books, so that precious ancient books can continue their cultural heritage and regain their vitality. The Ancient Book Protection Center of Shaanxi Provincial Library has completed the salvage restoration of the precious ancient book "Collection of Ancient and Modern Books" by using various technological means to assist in restoration, testing, paper supplementation, dyeing and other processes. As the largest and most extensively documented large-scale book in China, the "Collection of Ancient and Modern Books" consists of over 1000 volumes and more than 40000 pages. It is a milestone masterpiece in the history of Chinese books and book genres, and is known as the "Chinese Encyclopedia" of ancient times. It is on par with the "Yongle Encyclopedia" and the "Siku Quanshu" in the field of ancient literature and documents, and includes interdisciplinary content such as astronomy, geography, literature, history, philosophy, economics, and politics. The comprehensive collection of ancient Chinese literature from ancient times to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties has unique cultural and cultural value. Due to their age, many ancient books and papers gradually become hard, brittle, and damaged. Therefore, restoring the paper used in ancient books has become the key to restoration. The Institute for the Protection and Research of Chinese Ancient Books at Fudan University has replicated an ultra-thin restoration paper with a weight of only 1.6 grams per square meter, which has a paper quality similar to that of book printing paper from the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the repair process, the restorer uses repair paper to fill in the damaged parts of the ancient book, and then blends and adheres them with the original paper to complete the repair of an ancient book. And digital technology has made the content of ancient books no longer obscure and difficult to understand. Recently, the digital resource publishing platform for ancient books at the Capital Library has been officially launched. Readers can learn about ancient books through databases such as "version" and "binding", and observe the writing styles of the same Chinese character in different ancient books. In the "ancient text reading" section, they can convert ancient books into simplified characters and read them horizontally in real-time online, and break sentences in the article. By utilizing technologies such as AI and naked eye 3D, the Capital Library presents digital content of ancient books such as "The Peony Pavilion" and "The Creation of Things by Heaven" based on professional historical facts. It extracts profound Chinese art and wisdom from the vast sea of classics and presents them concretely to readers. (New Society)
