How can the Vice President of Science sow more seeds of exploration

2025-01-24

Every primary and secondary school in the country will welcome a science vice president... Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Education issued the "Guidelines for Science Education in Primary and Secondary Schools", which mentioned fully mobilizing the forces of universities, research institutes, science and technology venues, youth centers, museums, science and technology enterprises, etc., to ensure that every school has at least one science vice president, and to encourage and support scientists, science and engineering experts from high-level comprehensive universities, research institutes and other units to serve as science vice presidents. The basic education stage is a crucial period for "incubating" students' scientific spirit, cultivating young people's interest in science, and establishing scientific aspirations. Guidance and cultivation of scientific interest should start from a young age. Nowadays, with the accelerated evolution of a new round of technological revolution, the high-quality promotion of building a strong education country, and the continuous improvement of consensus among all sectors of society, coupled with the background of "double reduction", doing a good job in scientific education addition has become an important content of basic education reform. Science education in primary and secondary schools has ushered in a good opportunity for optimization and improvement. From grades one to nine, science courses have been offered, and independent information technology and labor courses have been set up. To widely carry out science festivals and club activities, and strengthen the construction of experimental conditions, relevant measures have achieved significant results. However, it should also be noted that there are still many shortcomings in our science education, among which the lack of full-time teachers is particularly prominent, leading to some courses becoming "talk on paper" teaching and falling into the trap of exam oriented education, making it difficult to stimulate more students' interest in science. The establishment of the Vice President for Science is timely and highly anticipated. But the question that comes with it is, who will be the vice president of science and who can be a good one? Relying on teacher education majors in universities to train science education teachers takes time. In contrast, mobilizing various scientific and technological talents, especially scientists, to participate in science education in primary and secondary schools can undoubtedly achieve twice the result with half the effort. In fact, since 2017, some places have been trying to hire research backbones from high-tech enterprises to become science vice presidents of local schools. In May 2023, the Ministry of Education and 18 other departments jointly issued a document officially proposing that "each school should appoint school leaders or experts and scholars as vice presidents of science". Guided by central documents and taking into account their own strengths, various regions have conducted institutional explorations on how vice presidents of science can transform from being mere paper writers to being part of the school. Some organizations collaborate with local science and technology bureaus, science associations, and other institutions to establish expert databases, from which experts are recommended to serve as vice presidents of schools for science; Some have put forward the "Five Ones" requirement, which clarifies the specific tasks of the Vice President of Science; Some have hired scientists as vice presidents of science through a comprehensive contract, exploring the science education model of "government+universities+venues+primary and secondary schools"... Many attempts have laid the foundation for the current nationwide promotion. Of course, strengthening science education, schools are just one of the strongholds. From in class to out of class, from school to home, from offline to online, the scenarios of science education are actually diverse. Can teenagers access high-quality science popularization content on short video platforms? In terms of incentive mechanisms, can scientists write "little books" to gain more support? In terms of public opinion, has the profession of "scientist" gained more respect? Science education resources are widely distributed in various departments, fields, and industries. Effective collaboration and utilization of these rich resources can gather them into a powerful force that nourishes everything silently. Only then can the "seeds" of science take root and sprout better, and lift the dream of becoming a "technological powerhouse". (New Society)
