The Chinese wisdom of "dual teaching of fish and fishery"

2025-01-15

The continuous expansion of Chinese MOOCs to the world has brought high-quality higher education resources from China to more countries, enhancing the accessibility of higher education in the "global South". With a large screen, a camera, and a network cable, students from universities across thousands of miles and different countries and regions are introduced into the classrooms of Chinese universities. It's difficult for us to learn such courses in Indonesia, and I cherish this learning opportunity Diya, a student from Tebuka University in Indonesia, studied urban environmental engineering courses with classmates from Tsinghua University through an online platform. You don't have to study abroad to enjoy the high-quality educational resources of China's top universities. The unique charm of MOOCs is to spread knowledge far and wide, and to enable individuals who are eager to learn to not be confined to one place or domain. By the end of 2024, China's smart higher education platforms have launched a total of 31000 high-quality online courses, with users covering 183 countries and regions and over 93 million visits; The "Love Course" and "Xuetang Online" platforms have opened more than 1000 courses in 14 languages to learners worldwide, with a total of 670000 learners. From the beginning with only 5 courses and over a hundred users, to now going global and gaining worldwide reputation, Chinese MOOCs have grown from scratch and become a business card of China's education openness. Knowledge is the ladder of human progress, but in some countries, limited by weaker higher education conditions, knowledge has become a scarce resource. Cracking the series of unbalanced and insufficient development problems in today's world and bridging the "knowledge gap" is an urgent task and a long-term solution. As a product of the deep integration of digital technology and higher education, MOOCs provide an open and shared knowledge carrier, which helps to solve the "knowledge gap" and promote "knowledge inclusiveness". Xi'an Jiaotong University has established a Silk Road training base, launching dozens of training topics and nearly a hundred international courses, cultivating over 10000 students and business personnel from more than 100 countries and regions; Southwest Jiaotong University has implemented the initiative of jointly building the "the Belt and Road", carried out the construction of courses and textbooks, and trained more than 5000 rail transit talents from more than 80 countries... China's constant pursuit of learning in the world has enabled China's high-quality higher education resources to reach more countries, and improved the accessibility of higher education in the "global south". In the past, it was about resources and activities going global, but now it is about services and standards going global. "MOOCs going global" is moving from "1.0" to "2.0". Improve course sharing and credit recognition mechanisms with foreign universities, and explore more attractive forms of learning outcomes transformation such as micro certificate programs; Leading the establishment of the World MOOC and Online Education Alliance, collaborating with over 30 renowned universities and online education institutions worldwide to build a two-way communication channel for course introduction and output; The release of the "Beijing Declaration on the Development of MOOCs" and the "Report on the Digital Development of World Higher Education" to share China's digital education experience with the world... The process of China's MOOCs "going global" is also a process of China actively expanding educational openness and promoting the digital development of global higher education. From a modern perspective, education is the cornerstone of a country's development. Establishing oneself as an expert and working together on the path of modernization is China's pursuit. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.. From the Chinese MOOCs of "sailing to the sea", to the unique Luban Workshop, and to the "Haisi Academy" and "Silk Road Academy" that provide precise services for local development, China not only brings specific projects, but also has the potential for development. The "MOOC Going Global" reflects the unique wisdom of China's "dual teaching of fish and fishery". China's development cannot be separated from the world, and the prosperity of the world also requires China. In the melodious symphony of China and the world rushing in both directions, education is one of the wonderful notes. Let more teachers and students gather in the cloud, let knowledge spread across mountains and seas, and continuously expand the scope of international education cooperation. China's footsteps are firmly moving forward and will not stop. (New Society)
