Approaching the biological evidence "decoder" Yang Fan
2025-01-08
The clock ticking, inside the Criminal Technology Center of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau Criminal Investigation Brigade, Yang Fan, Deputy Director of the Biological Evidence Room, closely watched the testing process. In front of him was the specimen found by the police from the septic tank. The investigating unit only detected the skin tissue belonging to the victim, but was unable to detect the crucial visceral tissue for a long time. What Yang Fan is currently doing is using the most advanced biological detection technology to help out of town investigative units improve the evidence chain and determine that visceral tissue also belongs to the victim. The final result confirmed the judgment, and this malignant criminal case that shocked the whole country was successfully prosecuted. The Criminal Investigation Brigade of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, also known as "Criminal Investigation 803" due to its house number 803, specializes in solving major and extremely serious cases. In addition to a group of well-known "detectives" who solve cases, there is also a group of unknown heroes who stand on the hidden front - criminal technical police officers. Yang Fan is one of them that cannot be ignored. Undaunted to search for clues, 2014 was the rising period of the development of biological evidence technology nationwide, and there was an urgent shortage of sophisticated technical talents everywhere. After graduating from the People's Public Security University of China with a master's degree, Yang Fan resolutely chose the career of criminal police and was admitted to the Criminal Technology Center. Here are the first batch of key laboratories of the Ministry of Public Security, which have trained many national second-class heroes and models of the public security system and Shanghai craftsmen. Yang Fan still remembers the summer when he first joined the police and accompanied Ma Kaijun, the leader of the Criminal Technology Center, to the scene of the murder case. Just after the rainstorm, Ma Kaijun led him into the forest for autopsy. The sweltering summer heat made the maggots on the female corpse pile up into small hills. They wore rubber gloves, and the worms wound around the gloves. Ma Kaijun did not care until he got a special specimen. The shock of that moment is indescribable. An excellent criminal technical police officer is not as simple as conducting tests in a laboratory. He must have the courage to not fear hardships and the persistence to selflessly devote himself in order to safeguard the rights of the living and uphold justice for the dead Yang Fan said. To make the deceased speak out, he always finds a new way: extracting key physical evidence from the back of a towel that strangles the deceased, finding the killer's bloodstains from the corners of an abandoned plastic suitcase, and even scraping off a large piece of wall leather... In order to solve a murder case 27 years ago, Yang Fan's team combines technical breakthroughs with investigative investigations, constantly colliding with key clues "intersections". Four years after the suspect's death, they try their best to extract key biological information from a sports T-shirt he wore before his death, and compare it with the bloodstains left on the scene at that time. The task force went through nearly 10000 days, traveling through 6 provinces and 15 cities, covering a distance of 300000 kilometers, and inspecting more than 30000 people. For a long time, only to seek justice and redress. Since becoming a police officer, he has handled and examined over 10000 pieces of biological evidence, providing significant clues for solving more than 2000 criminal cases; The application of biological evidence technology has also given hope to the re discovery of many long-standing cases. In the past five years, he directly helped to solve 46 homicide cases. Repeatedly arguing and pursuing the ultimate is the unanimous evaluation of Yang Fan by peers. He repeatedly argues and even has a bit of OCD when handling inspection materials. For some difficult inspection materials, he will cross compare with different inspection methods and innovatively use the "break down" extraction method to give physical evidence the opportunity to "reopen". When facing a "three no" case with no clear identity of the deceased, no social connections to investigate, and no investigation or technical means to use, Yang Fan keenly noticed that although only female biometric information was found on the victim's clothing, the heavy stone on her body could only be lifted by a strong male. Could he have a special relationship with the deceased? So Yang Fan cut the private parts of the deceased's intimate clothing into dozens of pieces, cross applied various new technologies, extracted the biological information of two men from them, and then used cutting-edge comparison methods to help investigators find one of them and confirm that the deceased was his wife. Then they traced the trail and found the real culprit, who was another male among them. Yang Fan is proficient in testing new technologies and also adept at deducing the process of committing crimes from vague clues. He designs the best extraction plan with scientific rigor and meticulous craftsmanship, which is what makes him famous. Faced with the only physical evidence in the Chen Nian murder case - a rubber hammer salvaged from the river water, he realized that the hammer had been soaked in river water and eroded by time. When extracting and testing, it was necessary to consider the impact of water erosion and bacterial erosion, as well as to eliminate later pollution as much as possible and protect this precious sample, which was particularly difficult. How can we awaken this dusty 18 year old physical evidence? The criminal tool is a rubber hammer, which does not match the commonly known iron hammer. The perpetrator should be engaged in a special profession, and this hammer is often used in daily life. The handle is wrapped with black tape, and the adhesive surface of the tape may leave traces of the user to some extent, even if it is washed away by river water, it will not be particularly thorough Yang Fan said. Following this idea, he redesigned the extraction plan and cross checked it using multiple methods. Two days later, he finally extracted complete biological information from the inside of the black tape that could be used as evidence. Based on this, the investigators traced and arrested the perpetrator who had been hiding for 18 years a week later, revealing the truth hidden in the dust. Whether technological innovation can lead to the successful decryption of biological codes depends not only on the meticulousness and patience of the detection personnel, but also on persistent technological innovation. In recent years, Yang Fan and his team have continuously explored new technologies and methods in practice, and developed the "Complex Kinship Index Calculation Software" which can infer more complex kinship relationships and accelerate the identification of the parties involved; The newly developed intersection warfare method vividly illustrates the important role of technology in leading investigation; Promote the development of new detection methods as local criminal technical standards, and pass the CMA review (qualification certification of inspection and testing institutions). In July 2021, Lao Hu, who lives in Shanghai, sought help from the police. At the age of 63, he was adopted by a family surnamed Hu in Shanghai when he was a child. As he grew older, his desire to recognize his ancestors and return to his roots became stronger. The police registered information and collected blood samples for Lao Hu, but after comparing with the national anti trafficking database, no results were found. At this point, Yang Fan's "Complex Kinship Index Calculation Software" came in handy, using national advantageous resources for sample comparison and investigation. It was found that Mr. Fang, who is 42 years old in Jurong, Jiangsu, may belong to the same family as Lao Hu, and there may be a genetic relationship between Mr. Fang and Lao Hu. Shortly afterwards, the police found Mr. Fang, 69, and his brothers and sisters in Jurong. The oldest was 82 years old, and the youngest was 58 years old. Yang Fan managed to reconstruct the genetic model of the deceased parents of the Fang family and compare it with the biological samples of Lao Hu... The nine siblings reunited after a 63 year hiatus. Yang Fan and his colleagues are currently following the popular TV series "I am a Criminal Investigation Officer". "Justice is not only your faith, but also the land beneath your feet" has left a deep impression on him. The inspection instrument beside him was printed with a line of big characters: Technology serves justice. This is also his inner voice. (New Society)
