Vietnam's total fertility rate hits historic low in 2024

2024-12-31

On the 30th, Vietnam News Agency cited data from the Population Bureau of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, stating that the total fertility rate (i.e. the average number of children per woman) in Vietnam in 2024 was 1.91, a historic low, and is expected to continue to decline in the coming years. According to the statistics of the Population Bureau of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam, the total fertility rate of Vietnam has been lower than the 2.1 required to ensure the stability of the national population for three consecutive years, which is 2.0 in 2022, 1.96 in 2023, and then 1.91 in 2024. If the total fertility rate continues to decline in this trend, Vietnam's population will begin to experience negative growth after 2054 and the decline will continue to increase. According to statistical data, the total population of Vietnam in 2023 is 104 million, with approximately 16 million people aged 60 and above, accounting for about 16% of the total population. According to the Vietnam News Agency, since 2011, the population aged 60 and above in Vietnam has exceeded 10%, entering an aging society. Vietnam's population will exceed 100 million in 2023, becoming the 15th country in the world and the 3rd in Southeast Asia to have a population of over 100 million. The Director of the Population Bureau of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, Le Thanh Yong, said that the current Vietnamese population is facing new challenges such as regional imbalance, gender imbalance, and aging population. The total fertility rate lacks sustainability and shows a trend of low fertility. The Vietnam News Agency reported that the Vietnamese Ministry of Health is drafting a draft of the Population Law, which is expected to be submitted to the Vietnamese National Assembly in 2025.
