The results of the fifth national economic census will be announced on December 26th. The census comprehensively identified the economic situation in China, objectively reflecting the progress made in high-quality economic development, and obtaining key indicators such as economic aggregate, structure, and efficiency. The census results show that the number of units in the secondary and tertiary industries has significantly increased, attracting more employees; The scale of enterprise assets continues to expand, operating income grows rapidly, technological innovation capabilities continue to improve, and labor production efficiency has been improved; The optimization and upgrading of industrial structure, the development and growth of digital economy, and the continuous enhancement of regional development coordination and balance have achieved significant results in China's high-quality development in the past five years. By the end of 2023, there will be 33.27 million legal entities engaged in activities in the secondary and tertiary industries nationwide, an increase of 11.481 million or 52.7% compared to the end of 2018 (which was the year of the fourth national economic census); There were 428.984 million employees in legal entities of the secondary and tertiary industries nationwide, an increase of 11.9% from the end of 2018. The research and development efforts continue to increase, and by 2023, the ratio of research and experimental development expenditure to operating income in China will reach 1.54%, an increase of 0.31 percentage points from 2018; In 2023, the number of patent applications for legal entities of industrial enterprises above designated size was 1.566 million, an increase of 63.6% compared to 2018. Emerging industries are flourishing, and by the end of 2023, there will be 158000 enterprises above designated size engaged in strategic emerging industry activities nationwide, accounting for over one-fifth of all industries and service industries above designated size. The momentum of green development is strong. In 2023, the production of solar cells (photovoltaic cells) and wind turbines in China will increase by 4.9 times and 7.4 times respectively compared to 2018. In addition, this national economic census has added for the first time the results of a survey on the digital economy. By the end of 2023, there will be 2.916 million legal entities and 36.159 million employees in the core industries of the digital economy in China.
