A journalist asked: Yesterday, Russia announced the list of BRICS partner countries, which has drawn widespread attention from the international community. Could you please introduce the specific situation?
Mao Ning: In October this year, President Xi Jinping attended the BRICS Kazan Summit and reached an important consensus with the leaders of other BRICS countries on the establishment of partner countries. This is another significant progress in the development process of BRICS following the historic expansion last year. After the summit, China has actively cooperated with Russia, the host country, and worked with other BRICS member countries to advance the work regarding partner countries. Eventually, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Uganda were determined to be the BRICS partner countries.
The addition of partner countries to the BRICS family marks that BRICS cooperation has reached a new level. The representativeness of the BRICS mechanism has been further expanded, and its appeal and influence have become more prominent. It is increasingly becoming an important platform for promoting the unity and cooperation of the "Global South".
