Promoting the implementation of global development initiatives, Chinese environmental think tanks play an important role
2024-09-24
President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative during the 76th General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly, which received a warm response from the international community. In the process of jointly discussing, building and sharing global development initiatives, Chinese environmental think tanks have been widely valued for their composite functions such as consultation, theoretical innovation, policy research, and public diplomacy, playing an important role in promoting the implementation of global development initiatives. One is the promoter of the green development concept represented by the modernization of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Chinese environmental think tanks promote the green development concept to flourish and bear fruit around the world through means such as ideological production, public opinion guidance, and public diplomacy. At the same time, strengthening the promotion of the concept of green development to the outside world and making the world understand China's green development is an important responsibility and duty of Chinese environmental think tanks. For example, China's environmental think tank has joined the "the Belt and Road" Green Development International Alliance to enhance the concept of "the Belt and Road" co building national sustainable development. The second is to build a global green development partnership with the core of seeking global ecological civilization. Collaborating for a global ecological civilization is an important support for implementing global development initiatives and building a community with a shared future for mankind. By leveraging the global partner network and intensive cooperation resources of Chinese environmental think tanks, especially the accumulated advantages of environmental think tanks on global platforms and cooperation networks, we can systematically promote the establishment of a global green development partnership with the core of seeking global ecological civilization. For example, the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, China's top environmental and development think tank, has enriched and improved China's external green partnership around global development initiatives, the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, green "the Belt and Road" and other issues of common concern to China and the world. The third is the collaborator in the construction of a global green development community based on the principle of consultation, co construction, and sharing. Green development and international cooperation are the golden keys to solving global environmental and development problems. Chinese environmental think tanks are an important link in promoting the two-way interaction between global development initiatives' green goals and green development practices. By providing high-level talent, intelligence, and other support, multi-level scientific and technological exchange platforms and their transformation channels, they unite the international community to jointly promote environmental protection and provide momentum for solving the problems of green development and international cooperation. Chinese environmental think tanks have a high level of scientific and technological innovation capabilities, closely related to enterprises, markets, and society, and can provide systematic and innovative solutions for sustainable development of enterprises and society. For example, the External Cooperation and Exchange Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the World Resources Institute (WRI) jointly held a seminar on "Green Supply Chain Cooperation from the Perspective of Global Development Initiatives" to explore how to promote the greening of global supply chains in the context of multiple challenges such as international trade frictions and climate crises, and help all parties implement global development initiatives. China is a global think tank powerhouse and is comprehensively promoting the construction of a new type of think tank with Chinese characteristics. Looking ahead, Chinese environmental think tanks can exert greater influence on the international stage. To further promote the transformation of Chinese environmental think tanks from important participants and contributors in implementing global development initiatives to role models and leaders. Specifically, first of all, we need to more accurately position the role of Chinese environmental think tanks. Chinese environmental think tanks need to deepen their role positioning, keep pace with the times, cooperate with the overall diplomacy of the country, and always be contributors and demonstrators in promoting the implementation of Chinese concepts and plans such as global development initiatives. Secondly, we need to continue to improve the green governance function of Chinese environmental think tanks. Chinese environmental think tanks should strengthen their theoretical research on global development initiatives and form more leading research results on the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature; Strengthen participation in the implementation of global development initiatives and provide more and better green governance solutions for governments, businesses, and society. Thirdly, Chinese environmental think tanks face challenges such as insufficient global influence and limited international narrative capabilities. Chinese environmental think tanks should strengthen the construction of China's independent green knowledge system and discourse system, continuously enhance the international green influence and green discourse power of Chinese environmental think tanks. Chinese environmental think tanks should continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign think tanks, media, enterprises and other institutions, constantly move towards the center stage of promoting the implementation of global development initiatives, and make new contributions to the dissemination of green concepts, the construction of green partnerships, and the exploration of green governance practices in global development initiatives.
