Jinning, Yunnan: The technological power behind a flower

2024-09-03

In less than an hour and a half, the flowers dropped from 25 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius, achieving rapid pre cooling while effectively solving the problems of excessive dehydration and uneven cooling. At the Yunnan Jinning Flower Industry Modernization Demonstration Park, the research team successfully applied pressure differential rapid pre cooling technology to cut flowers such as roses, which increased efficiency by more than 8 times compared to traditional cold storage pre cooling. This is a microcosm of Yunnan's technology empowering the flower industry. The Yunnan Jinning Flower Industry Modernization Demonstration Park is located in Baofeng Street, Jinning District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. The climate here is warm and humid, suitable for the growth of various flowers, and with convenient transportation, it has the advantage of industrial cluster development. It is the main production area of fresh cut flowers and succulents in Jinning, a demonstration county for the "one county, one industry" flower industry in Yunnan Province. In recent years, in order to promote scientific research achievements to better serve the industry, some universities and research institutions have settled in Baofeng Street, setting up laboratories in the fields and jointly creating the "World's One Flower" brand. Here, the reporter sees the technological power behind the flowers. In October 2022, China Agricultural University and Yunnan Yuntianhua Co., Ltd. leveraged their respective strengths to jointly establish the China Agricultural University Yuntianhua Flower Joint Research Center, which includes a science and technology institute. Nowadays, the research center is responsible for providing full industry chain technical support services for the Yunnan Jinning Flower Industry Modernization Demonstration Park. Including the design of post harvest processes for fresh flowers, rapid pre cooling technology with differential pressure, and intelligent graded packaging, the research team innovates post harvest processing technology to meet the modern and large-scale production needs of cut flower commodities. The vase insertion period for fresh cut flowers from Yunnan, after storage and transportation to the consumer end, is generally 3 to 4 days. Using our self-developed post harvest processing technology, the vase insertion period can be extended to 7 to 8 days Sun Xiaoming, Associate Professor of China Agricultural University and Executive Dean of Yuntianhua Flower Science and Technology College of China Agricultural University, said. Extending the bottle insertion period requires not only innovation in post harvest processing technology, but also efforts in variety breeding. In addition to basic ornamental and yield traits, the research team also focuses on examining the post harvest characteristics of flowers and screening new varieties with long bottle insertion periods and good opening performance. Professor Gao Junping from China Agricultural University and Director of the China Agricultural University Yuntianhua Flower Joint Research Center introduced that the team has successfully bred two rose varieties, "Feiyun" and "Ice Tea", which have excellent anti-aging and storage and transportation resistance characteristics and are popular in the market. In 2019, Li Shufa, then a researcher at the Flower Research Institute of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, came to Baofeng Street. At that time, there were not many people here who knew about soilless cultivation and high standard greenhouses. In extreme weather, flower farmers and enterprises suffered heavy losses. From planting to management, and then to later promotion and application, Li Shufa and his team have "moved" a complete set of efficient cultivation techniques to Baofeng Street and radiated outward from there. Jiang Junwen was one of the first flower farmers to taste the sweetness. In 2021, under the guidance of researchers, he transformed 55 acres of land into a greenhouse for substrate cultivation and integrated water and fertilizer cycling, planting rose varieties such as Peach Snow Mountain and Plateau Red. In the second year, the yield of roses per mu increased threefold, and due to its good appearance, the highest unit price of plateau red rose was sold at 9 yuan per branch. Nowadays, in Jinning District, flower cultivation is gradually shifting from soil cultivation to semi substrate and full substrate (soilless) cultivation modes, and the promotion area is steadily increasing. Qingshuihe Village, located on the east side of Baofeng Street, is a famous "Yueji Village". On the 200 acre research and development base for new rose varieties in the village, there are over 3000 varieties of roses growing. This is what Dr. Li Shubin and his team from Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences spent nearly ten years planting. In 2015, Li Shubin, who had returned from studying abroad, led several students to a barren mountain in Baofeng Street and established the "Xiao Ai Breeding Team" to start developing new varieties of roses. He is well aware that genetic breeding is an important way to cultivate new varieties of flowers, and the genes of ancient Chinese roses and wild roses are the breakthrough point for cultivating new varieties of roses. By repeatedly crossbreeding a large number of modern roses and ancient varieties, Li Shubin's team harvests hundreds of thousands of hybrid roses seeds every year and has the ability to select more than 10 new rose varieties annually. At present, the team has developed more than 30 new rose varieties with independent intellectual property rights, among which "Jinning Cuihua" and others have been sold throughout the country. Li Shubin said, "It's worth the effort to enable flower farmers to plant roses with 'Chinese cores'." Currently, Li Shubin's team has established a rose germplasm gene bank of over 300 acres, collected more than 3000 domestic and foreign rose variety resources, more than 2000 wild resources, and preserved over 200000 breeding materials, including 60 precious ancient Chinese rose varieties. Thanks to the efforts of various parties, the current flower planting area in Jinning District is 61900 mu, with an annual output of 5.6 billion fresh cut flowers. (New Society)
